2019 MBA Student Representative Speech - Vivienne Chen

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen!

It is a great pleasure and honor to stand here today as the student representative for PKU-UCL MBA programme. No matter which programme you are doing and no matter you are doing full-time or part-time, I believe every one of you has gone through all the struggles, doubts and uncertainties during the application, because it is never an easy decision for MBA study.

Like most of the female students here, I am a mother. I have a 3-year-old boy. And like most of the working mom, I keep thinking what I can share with my boy, assist him to know this world we are living, how to balance my work and family. On the other hand, after these years' working in the financial industry (mainly custodian banking area), I started to think a lot of questions. Who am I? What is my true interest? What is my value? Where am I going to be? …I also had a lot of thinking on my expectation on career and community. Until one day I met BiMBA. The unique objectives and ideals of BiMBA are "The Spirit of Peking University, Socially-Oriented Sentiments, National Development, and a Global Vision". Not to mention, it combines the strength of UCL School of Management, which is a world-leading university specializing in innovation, entrepreneurship, technology, and analytics. I realized the importance of a global vision and a broad perspective. Although I don't have the answers to those questions as of this moment, but I'm going to explore during this one and half year. I know this would be one of the most important decisions in my life.

Today, I'm really happy to see all the talented people from different industries as my classmates. We might have different objectives but we made the same important move in our life. I can imagine that the next one and a half year or two years or two and a half years will be very challenging, but I know we are ready to take all the challenges and move forward. We are going to study together, work together, maybe gym together, share with each other, support each other and inspire each other during the whole study and I’m sure we will have lifelong friendship and trust.

Last but not the least, from the day we accepted this offer, it represents not only honor or personal growth, but also social responsibilities. We shall always keep in mind to protect our environment, to better manage social risks, to help people who need our help, to deliver greater accountabilities and to connect with the fate of our nation. We choose MBA in BiMBA not because it is easy, but because it is hard. It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. We are facing both opportunities and challenges in China and the world. How would we challenge the status quo? How would we move this world forward and make it more civilized? How would we apply technology to benefit people's well-being? Let's explore the answers together here in BiMBA.

Thank you!
