William Mason: A Rewarding Journey in China

Jun 13-2019

When the then 19-year-old William Mason, now a 2018 Full-time MBA student of Peking University joint program with UCL, came to China for the first time, he did not know how his career path would eventually be closely connected with the country.

Now, as the Global Marketing Manager of Beijing Aeonmed Co. Ltd. Global, a total solution provider OR and ICU equipment, he creates and implements global marketing strategy and achieves sales for the company in the global market, including Asia, and the Middle East.

Meanwhile, he also keeps running his own medical device startup, offering unique medical device solutions to hospitals and clinicians throughout the global.

Needs for self-improvement to ensure future success

After gaining a bachelor's degree in global business, Mason entered the healthcare industry with a focus on cross-border operations and marketing.

Working exclusively within the medical device industry and cooperating directly with both the public and the private sectors of various nations, Mason has a strong understanding of the complexities and nuances surrounding successfully penetrating healthcare markets.

“As an entrepreneur and an employee in a mid-sized enterprise, I am at the point in my career where I am eager to take the next step to gain the knowledge and expertise necessary to ensure my company's success and stronger corporate prospects.”

With a busy schedule representing two companies, he found himself facing challenges in establishing the necessary processes and quality systems that the growing demands, as well as the ever-changing regulatory environment.

To solve these challenges, a combination of practical and theoretical understanding of business is what he needs, rather than some purely theoretical understanding of economics or finance.

The unique appeals of BiMBA

After considering different programs, Mason decided BiMBA at Peking University was the best fit for him.

Mason believes that the MBA education is more worthy when it comes from a top university and networking should not be the only asset of an MBA program.

With BiMBA's dual structure of the Peking University-UCL joint MBA program, together with a mix of quantitative and qualitative courses, the program's high-quality education and dynamism have been highly appealing.

Besides prestigious reputation maintained by both PKU and UCL, the diversity of both the faculty and the student body offers him opportunities to gaining more diverse perspectives from China, Europe, and the rest of the globe in order to challenge his worldview and shape new ideas.

With professors from the two top universities, the program has been rewarding, supportive and beyond his expectation, said Mason.

“Besides reputation and program flexibility, a wide range of expertise and course offerings was critically important for me in choosing BiMBA.”, said Mason.

For example, the Communication Skills class, on which he did not place much expectation in, turned out to be “surprisingly very helpful”, he said.

“I always thought communication was a key strength of mine—especially public speaking”, stated Mason. “However, there are many aspects of public speaking that I had not previously thought about, such as the concept of being still in delivery. Being made aware of this was instrumental in further improving my public speaking ability”, he continued.

And the Finance and Accounting courses are also in high quality, and those courses help him improve his skills in quantitative analysis, which used to be his weakness.

“Being that I come from a MarCom background, I really wanted to improve my competency in finance and accounting. By pushing myself to opt for finance and accounting related courses, I was amazed by how the quality of teaching improved my understanding of subjects that were previously intimidating”, said Mason.

“The program has provided me with an invaluable framework that allows me to look at the global business from a unique perspective,” he said, noting that has been the most impressionable takeaway for him.

Knowledge of China to backup career goal

“When I think about the development of my professional life, it is very hard for me to see it evolving without the inclusion of a connection to China.”

The rise of the global economy is making the world a smaller place in terms of cooperation and transactions between nations and businesses. This especially proves to be relevant within the medical industry.

With the ultimate goal to open his own manufacturing facilities in both Mainland China and the United States, understanding and experience in China are crucially important for Mason.

As one of the few foreigners working within the emerging healthcare industry in China, he believes his extensive travels and experiences have provided a unique worldview that he would like to share with fellow classmates.

“China has undeniably emerged as a key player in the global business arena over the last two decades. However, I believe that many people tend to overlook the fact that China is becoming increasingly more innovative and entrepreneurial.”

“As China's economy continues to mature and its influence continues to increase throughout the world, understanding China is incredibly important for business leaders of today, and even more so for the business leaders of tomorrow.”
