Thinking Big and Moving Fast

Su Liang, a student from 2018 part-time MBA class, wrote about his experience at the Stars China symposium 2019.

May you live in interesting times

The Stars China symposium 2019 were taken from 12-16 May 2019 in Chongqing and Chengdu. The theme is “Thinking Big and Moving Fast”. There were more than 100 attendees from more than 10 countries globally. During the symposium, opening discussion regarding international relationship and new technologies which may impact future deeply impress me deeply. It’s my honor to attend in whole symposium from Chongqing to Chengdu. In my thought, “Thinking Big and Moving Fast” is not only a target of China and foreign companies which prefer develop China market further in the symposium, but also a wish for myself in my mind. I would like to descript some main topics which impress me most in the symposium and my thinking regarding.

The main objectives of the symposium are focus on 4 parts: Broaden the horizon to better understand major global and Chinese trends which will impact business and society over the next three to five years, like G2, the Belt and Road initiative, and also new technologies such as Big data, Artificial Intelligence and Leading China’s Digital Disruption. Get on-the-ground impressions of the business and investment opportunities in Southwest China through visits and discussions with a range of companies in Chongqing and Chengdu from local start-ups to global champions. Engage in interdisciplinary and intercultural dialogue to share experiences with peers across industries and from around the world. Contribute to the personal development of better “Leaders of the Next Generation” to drive responsible and sustainable actions.

G2, Re-globalization and Belt and Road initiative, China influence widely but face conflict right now

The relationship between US and China is always under discussion right now. And different positions have different views. Mr. Michael BARBALAS, who is former president and vice chairman for American Chamber of Commerce in China think the oriental reason of competition is “natural result of two big countries and economies”, for highly interconnected and compete across multiple sectors and domains. That also a reflection of a conflict between “Make America Great Again” and “China Dream”. He also shows that china remains an important market for US Company despite US company’s tempered growth and investment expectations. Almost 96% US company think positive bilateral relations between China and the US is very important for their business which figures source from AmCham China 2019 Business Climate Survey. And also nearly 75% expect bi-lateral relations to deteriorate or –at best-stay the same in 2019. At last he shows possible results is resolving trade issues in near term, China commitment to reforms in

medium term and Finding a new rationale and framework for the US-China relationship. You can see his opinion is China should change but not the US’s problem in some ways.

In the opposite, Mr. Huang Jing who is professor and dean in institute of international and regional studies BLCU think the value is the key object and focus between two countries, and countries around china will be another key element for China’s future if negotiation broken up. No matter negotiation will go to, the global organization will be rewritten and a new balance or new ecology will last for the next 10 years globally which china will have more voice in global. Mr. Wang Dong who is professor of Peking University also mentioned that china contributed a lot for global economic increase for example, according to IMF, in 2016 Chinese economy has contributed to over 30% of Africa’s economic growth, 50% of Asia’s economic growth and 33% of global economic growth, and now China has the second-largest volume of outbound investment. “Now China will meet the world again, China is no longer the china we know, and the world is bound to be changed, reshaped and remolded significantly.” “Not winners will take all game, but mutual moulding and sharing rules, upgrading and expansion of the old system.” “China does not seek to set up a separate kitchen, or overthrow the existing system, rather, China wants to reform and upgrade the existing international system.”

Above all, foreigner and Chinese have different opinion regarding the trade war and solution in their perspective. When I read 《On China》 By Henry Kissinger, he mentioned “Exception Theory”, for instance US was a exception of UK in 18 century, and China is an exception of US now. In my opinion, it may not the right time to conflict hardly with US now because China have a lot hidden problem such as low-end manufacture and high leverage in economy ourselves. It’s much better to keep low profile at the moments for us to be a successful and strong exception in future. If we look back at the trade conflict between Japan and the US in the 1980s, although Japan fall into the “twenty lost years”, but Japan finished a great thing at the periods, that is upgrade the industry- from the heavy industry and labor-intensive manufacturing, to the semiconductor and internationalized high-end manufacturing. Sometimes, take the advantage of the opportunity and pressure from outside, adjust themselves will get the least costly result. I don't think that Japan's strategy is so smart, because many strategies are actually forces by outside. But I think Japan deserves to admire that no matter how the opponents attack, they always anchor the same goal, that is, to achieve industrial upgrading and enhance the competitiveness of their country. So for China, what is most important at this stage and what strategy we should adopt is even more important than many other thing at the stage.

For Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Mr. Joachim von Amsberg who is vice president of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) said that AIIB have 70 members and 27 prospective members globally up to now, which have loans approved since inception reach 7.9 Billion USD which support Urban, Water, Transport and Energy projects for countries in Belt and Road, the biggest loan countries is India which loan 2.2 Billion USD since inception. AIIB have support a lot for Belt and Road countries to improve the local infrastructure and support the economy development. BRI was launched by China in 2013 included 65 countries initially and extended to 122 countries by the end of 2018 and with potential of further extension. In my opinion, BRI and AIIB have increase China’s influence in global since 2013, and really help some Asia countries develop their economy. By 2017, China investment to BRI countries has been over 50 Billion USD and Silk Road Fund committed 7 Billion among 17 projects.

E-Commerce, Big data and AI change the way we work and live

In China, the e-commerce platform headed by Alibaba has developed rapidly in the past many years. Now China’s total online transactions in 2016 is more than 37.1 Trillion RMB, which is 50 times of US and more than Japan’s annual GDP. Many foreign participants are amazed at the development of e-commerce in China. And they are interested on eWTP proposed by Alibaba Group in 2016, which will benefit 80% of the world’s small and medium enterprises. Now China E-commerce have heading out china. According to Alibaba’s E-Commerce Connectivity Index, Eastern Europe, West Asia, ASEAN countries have the closest connection with China in cross-border e-business. As a Chinese, I am very proud to see that China’s e-commerce platform can not only bring more convenience to the Chinese, but also be able to take Chinese products to the world.

The part I am most interested in is about the perspective of a multinational conglomerate from Mr. Jianjun HU who is chief cybersecurity offers in Simens China. He introduce some AI and Big Data used in industrial. And also he impressed us that billions of devices will being connected by the Internet of Things and are interacting on an entirely new level and scale, Then Artificial intelligence and big data analytics will revolutionizing the way we make decisions. Self-adaptation equipment as an example were showed. All of this made me firmly continue to engage in using the tool of remote monitoring and big data analysis to achieve the preventive maintenance, equipment and operation management, plus spare part platform, which connected all the equipment, storage and data within an enterprise to reduce the cost production management and operation.

In addition to these, Visiting on BOE Chengdu make me feel more confidence and proud in some high-end manufacture, such as LCD or OLED screen manufacture. Mr. Rui Wen who is national strategy general manger introduce the AI used in Meitu, make me know Meitu are not only an APP make human being beauty in picture, but also use many data to analyze customer’s trend and also used in some security area. The start-up enterprises visiting such as XGimi, Envee, DroidHang, Lepao, Smart Mind and Kuaishu make me proud with the envy from other countries attendees.

Last but not the least, China policy have encourage innovation and start up enterprise for many years, and many Chinese companies have reach the high-end globally. I hope the environments of encourage innovation will continued in next decade which will definitely lead to good future for China and Chinese.

Firm opening policy and flexible mechanism

During the Symposium, we have opportunities to visit Liangjiang New Area in Chongqing and Singapore-Sichuan High-Tech Innovation Park. Different from some local officials who used to be the old-fashioned bureaucrats I met before in north China, the governors of two areas shows their great welcome and openness to attendees of other countries, and they promised their policy to help the MNC and start-up companies may in the areas in frankly. And I communicated with some start-up enterprises when we visit their company, they are shows their satisfied with local government. And I noticed a details in Liangjiang New Areas, their department are not divided in tradition way as function, such as tax bureau, Administration for Industry and Commerce etc. The departments are founded according different industry that means the company can solve all things and find the right person directly, rather than runing in many departments and bureaus before. All these opening policy and flexible mechanism in government has completely changed my view and made me more confident about the future of China.

IP protection, Environmental Change and How to Build Trust in China

As more than half attendees were the first time to china, Mr. Ren Shengce from Shanghai International College of Intellectual Property introduce Chinese policy development regarding IP which d reduced many people's concerns. And also Dr. Claus Rettig come from Evonik introduce chinses policy regarding environment protection and show his great confidence of green chemical industry development in China. And also Mr. Wang Taili who is partner of East & Concord Partner gave attendees some examples and suggestion regarding how to build trust with Chinese customers.

In addition to all of these, I have some feelings after four days of contact with the participants.

China is strong and I am really proud of that, but not many people from other countries really know the real China. Half of foreign attendees were the first time to china, even their worked for big MNCs. They mainly got the parts information from internet and TV in their countries to understand China. Government should pay attention on the Chinese portrait promotion globally.

Confidence. I got much more confidence about future when compared with other countries and visiting the local areas and enterprises. If we can maintain an open mind and policy, firm innovation and industrial upgrading, China’s future is still bright in my generation at least.

Grateful. The Stars symposium is a great platform not only understand business, but also communicate with more people globally. Thanks for NSD and Stars for the opportunity.

Finally I want to end with the subtitle of my report. “May you live in interesting times” A British diplomat once claimed this was an old Chinses curse. Whether the saying came from China or not, it is true that “interesting times” can create some real challenges for the people who live through them. I think that we are living through the “interesting times” now. And I’m fortunate that I have the opportunity to confront these challenges and opportunities now and future in the decades: Thinking Big and Moving Fast as I Can.
