Students and Faculty of BiMBA put on a BiMBA Style Performance last weekend at its annual New Year’s Banquet

Feb 03-2013

The End of the World is shown to be simply just another reason for a party.

On December 22, 2012, the sun rose from the east like it has done since the dawn of time; and the Mayan prophecy has been completely refuted. To celebrate life and the days to come, BiMBA chose to host its 2013 New Year’s Banquet on this special day, inviting the BiMBA family from all over the world to come and join BiMBA to celebrate the festivities of the New Year.

Although the Dinner was scheduled to begin at 7:30pm, many students arrived earlier to get ready for their performances. By 6pm, the banquet hall at Kerry Hotel was already filled with current and former Full-time MBA, Part-time MBA, and EMBA students dressed in fabulous evening gowns and dazzling razor-sharp tuxedo suits, reminiscing on their past experiences at BiMBA with their fellow alumni, and eager to get the party started. After most guests have taken their seat, the lights dimmed and brightened once again just as the four hosts took center stage. Let the festivities begin.

“Many important events took place in 2012, and besides the prophesized End of the World, perhaps the event that affected us the most is the 18th People’s Congress” the host began, “In congruence with the most important event of our country this year, BiMBA also had a shift in leadership this year”. As the crowd thunderously applauded, the new dean of Peking University’s National School of Development, Mr. Yao Yang took the stage, and gave the audience his New Year wishes on behalf of the new leaders of the school.

Dean Yao recounted many milestones and breakthroughs the National School of Development (formerly China’s Center for Economic Research) had done, such as creating the first Dual-Degree program in the history of PKU, or establishing with economists and foreign business schools the first international MBA program (BiMBA). He has the confidence and responsibility to ensure that, he will, with the help from his fellow faculty members bring NSD to brand new heights. “With the return of Justin Yifu Lin, NSD will definitely become better than ever before”. On this note, Justin Yifu Lin took the stage and his first words were, quite fittingly, “I’m home”. Lin went on to say “East, West, home is the best”, Langrun Garden is everyone’s home, and he welcomes all students and alumni to come home anytime they want.

The first group to take stage was the students of ’12 Full-time MBA Class. With the most globalized and diverse MBA class, the group chose to use piano and dance to convey their theme, because music and dance is the most globalized way to express happiness. The class members took turns performing on stage, doing solo, couple, and comic dance routines to lively portray the “Life of BiMBA Students”.

Compared to the ’12 Full-time Class, the performances of the ’11 EMBA Class were much more mature and emotionally stirring, stimulating the audience to reminisce on their past experiences at BiMBA. They utilized a combination of animation and live performance, using the communication between a grandfather and his granddaughter to take the audience back in time, back to a time when they were students of BiMBA. Furthermore, the ’11 EMBA class performance also touched on current events of 2012, including key events and incidences. The class ended its performance with a song that stimulates the audience to remember the memories they’ve shared in the past.

The ’12 Part-time MBA class used a completely different model to entertain the audience. As a class that only recently enrolled in BiMBA, their performances were based on their enthusiasm for the years to come, and their vision of the future. The performance began with a short film titled “Dreams illuminates reality” to show how the students made important choices in life, and what they envision their future to be. The class ended their segment with a live music performance, which brought the atmosphere of the banquet hall to its highest point yet; however, there’s no better way to raise the roof than to put on the staple song of 2012 – Psy’s “Gangnam Style”.

As the already familiar intro began, the ’11 Part-time MBA class’s video rendition of Gangnam Style, playfully dubbed “BiMBA Style” began playing on the screen. Throughout the second half of 2012, this song is surely familiar to everyone already, even those who are not k-pop aficionados. The video showed not only surrounding environments of BiMBA, but also an impromptu performance by BiMBA’s own dean Bruce Stening and legal professor. The playful performance showed the audience the fun side of BiMBA, and many students rose to clap along this familiar melody, some even going as far as having a little dance off of their own.

’12 EMBA class’s performance was a three-part trilogy centered on the prophesized end of the world. The performance began with the end of the world, expressed through a dance routine using glow sticks, followed by the revival of humanity portrayed through a hymn by one of the students, and ended with the saving of the world, and the reuniting of the BiMBA family.

However, all good things must come to an end, and there’s no better way to show this than to end the banquet with a performance by the ’10 EMBA class. After 2 years of New Years Banquet performances, this year’s performance will be the last performance by the class, which already graduated back in June, 2012. It is only fitting that their performance be not only the last performance of the night, but also the last performance that they will ever perform as students of BiMBA. The class chose a song that best describes their emotions, and the screens played a slideshow that reminisced all of their experiences at BiMBA. As the song ended, and the graduation bells rung throughout the banquet hall, everyone took stage once again, and took a group picture to forever remember this moment. 2012 may be over, but memories last forever.

All of the student’s performances were meticulous and very well planned out. The hard work and dedication of the students will always be remembered, no matter how many years has gone by, the performances by BiMBA’s wonderful students will surely be talked about for years to come.
