Graduation Ceremony of 2009 BiMBA Graduates

On the morning of June 20th, the graduation ceremony of PKU National School of Development’s 2009 BiMBA graduates was grandly held in PKU Centennial Memorial Hall. Professor Zhou Qiren—President of PKU National School of Development, Professor Hai Wen—Vice-president of PKU, Mr. Ma Yun—Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Group, Chairman and Non-Executive Director of Alibaba.com(China)Technology Co.,Ltd. , together with thousands of 2009 graduates, attended the ceremony. Hundreds of students’ families also presented there, witnessing and sharing the landmark moment with the graduates. The ceremony was hosted by Professor Wu Hemao, Executive Vice-president of National School of Development, Peking University.

The Ceremony started with the majestic national anthem. Firstly, Professor Hai Wen—Vice-president of PKU and one of the six founders of China Centre for Economic Research, gave a speech to the students presented, extending his most heartfelt congratulations to the graduates. Professor Hai Wen pointed out that, no matter whether for the country as a whole, or for Beijing University, or for National School of Development, or for China Centre for Economic Research, 2009 is equally memorable for tem all. 90 years ago, as the May 4th Movement broke out, Peking University students walked up to the streets and courageously shouldered the historical responsibility. 60 years ago, the People's Republic of China founded, and the industrious brave Chinese people became the masters of themselves. 15 years ago, a group of promising young people cherishing ambitious ideals established China Centre of Economic Research, which has promoted scientific research and development and education in the economic field. And for all the graduates today is a much more memorable moment, from when on they will move into the society and the whole world with the identity of Peking University graduates. Professor Hai Wen hoped that, regardless of their future and occupation, the graduates should all cherish the reputation of Peking University; should be strict with themselves at all times, should take up the historical responsibility for our nation and people.

After that, Professor Zhang Li delivered a speech to the graduates on behalf of all the staff. He firstly sent warm congratulations to the students, hoping that everyone treasures the studying experience in National School of Development, and Langrun Garden will be a spiritual home for them forever. Encouraging the students to commit themselves into China’s practical problems with a strong sense of responsibility, Professor Zhang also wishes them to take up historical responsibility as they pursuit self-achievements and self-realization. At last, he wishes all the students always to have the most valuable things in life, that is, a happy life, a warm family and the brilliant sunshine.

Then Professor Dong Zhenxi, specially-invited teacher, reviewed his own university life in PKU. He hoped the graduates to be real respected PKU graduates by possessing a strong sense of social responsibility and a diligent working style, to make greater contributions to the nation and the people. Double-degree student representative Liu Yiran, doctorate student representative Chen Binkai and BiMBA EMBA07 graduate representative Ma Hongtao also gave speeches one after another. They expressed heart-felt thanks to all the hard-working professors and teachers in National School of Development, from whom they not only learned knowledge but also upright personality and a rigorous working style. Finally they shared the joy of finishing the study together and the unwillingness to leave Langrun Garden.

Next, Professor Zhou Qiren, President of PKU National School of Development, delivered a speech, congratulating all the graduates presented. As an important landmark in their whole lives, today would worth memorizing and cherishing. He hoped the students to bear in mind the object and purpose of Peking University and China Center for Economic Research’s founding, to remember their own responsibility and mission. Only when they go beyond their individual concerns can their world become broader.

As a tradition, every year’s graduation ceremony would invite a successful figure to share his/her life experiences with the graduates. And this year we have the honor of owning Alibaba Group’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ma. Yun, whose business insights and passionate speech pushed the entire graduation ceremony to another climax.

Finally the most exciting moment of the ceremony came—issuing certificates. 900 more graduates walked to the front, and Professor Zhou Qiren, Hai Wen, Lu Feng, Yang Zhuang and so on shook hands with every one of them one by one, awarding certificates to them and posing for pictures together. After that, on Professor Wu Hemao’s solemn declaration, all the graduates assigned the cap tassel from the right to the left, which signals their formal graduation. The Graduation Ceremony went toward the end with the rhythms of sing for the motherland.
