Exciting Campus Life Re-igniting Career Aspirations During Economic Crisis

Apr 18-2013

May 20th 2009, BiMBA——“There is a group of people, who shall never trust to destiny, and whatever situation they find themselves in, they believe the judge of one's life can only be oneself. During the economic crisis, instead of joining those who passively wait for opportunities to knock at the door, they actively create opportunities and stride more steadily into the future.” The last alumni experience sharing workshop for BiMBA's admission season of 2009 was commenced again on a fairly optimistic note.

Though it was the last such event during the 2009 admission season, the atmosphere turned out to be exceptionally lively, many potential applicants and those already admitted sitting together and exchanging experiences. No specific topic was set for the workshop, but most of the participants chose to dwell upon the topic of career development during the economic crisis. Faculty members from BiMBA and past alumni all approached the topic from their own angle and contributed their thoughts and views, which every applicant present found enlightening and rewarding. The sincere and frank words from the alumni pushed the meeting to one climax after another.

“I used to work for the Ministry of Commerce for ten years and I needed a platform that can lead me onto a new career path and usher me into a corporate environment. To study at BiMBA served as a great transition period for me, as my experiences here inspired me to observe and analyze the economic situation and development trend from a broader perspective. During the financial crisis, only those who know how to follow the trend can seize the opportunity. At BiMBA, by re-analyzing the economic situation and my own career plan with a broader vision, I finally found myself a more solid and secure career goal.” said Yan Xiaodong (see the picture above), monitor of the Full-time Grade 2007 of BiMBA (FT08). “During the study, not only did my personal qualities, social experiences, business skills and management theories improve, I also met many great classmates who share the same dream as mine. To hang around and share ideas with them has broadened my horizon and widened my window of opportunity. Finally I'd like to add, incidentally, that I recommended a person right before I graduated, who is also the monitor of the Full-time Grade 2008, and she happened to be my wife.”

I came back to the school with a grateful heart. The study load was way too heavy than I expected. But looking back now I found I've also learned a lot. Though it was a tough experience, I'm glad I did it or I would be doing what I was doing previously for those two years, in that case nothing of mine would have been changed as positively as I am now." Yang Xinbin said, one of the P05 alumni who started his own business. Having filled positions in almost all businesses throughout the auto industry, he also got some valuable personal experiences to share: “While choosing a job, we shall not be looking solely at the brand reputation of a company, and then arbitrarily choose the one whose products we truly like, for we are to work for the company instead of becoming a customer of it. The most important thing is to check out the company's corporate culture and see if it fits. Having worked for almost all companies in the auto sector I always cherished a dream that is to do something of my own. And I feel lucky to be able to meet so many friends who shared the same aspirations here at BiMBA, and this remains one of the greatest gains I've made at the school."

Xin Bin's words set many people present thinking. On career choice, Zhou Li, senior career development consultant in the Career Development Department, shared her thoughts from another angle: “It might not be the wisest thing to do to choose a job solely by the reputation of a company, but different people have different needs at different phases. What one should do, therefore, is to look back and reflect upon what has been through, to ascertain what added values it has been brought to him/her, and based on these reflections rationally choose his/her next career goal."

While most of the alumni were still absorbed in thoughts, the activity's another climax occurred. Candy, an FT08 MBA student from Hong Kong, related the exciting aspects of campus life and the unique advantages BiMBA enjoys in an infectious manner and from an entirely new angle. “When I first applied, many friends of mine were confused. They thought I had been working for 10 years in a pretty good position already, why abandon all these and go to school in a full-time manner again? But now they all think I was far-sighted and wise in making that choice, for the crisis just hit, and I happened to be in school. What I was thinking back then was that I should spend the whole year adjusting myself and organizing my experiences. Since the whole world was looking at China, at Beijing at that time, I decided I should go to the best school there, and such an experience would turn into my competitive advantage once I graduate and work in an internationalized environment. The greatest benefit I received at BiMBA is having a bridge, so to speak, built between my previous working experiences and my dream career. While studying here I have many opportunities to do drills with classmates from 11 countries and regions, which makes me firmly believe that if I work with colleagues and bosses with the similar cultural background in the future, I will certainly handle them!" As a representative of the wishes to re-plan one's career options and start anew during the economic crisis, Candy's  feelings and personal experiences aroused wide interest among the audience.

In addition to the personal experiences of the alumni, the guests also paid special attention to how BiMBA offers its career development services. In answering this question, Teacher Zhou gave a detailed introduction to the complete career development system of the school, as well as multiple kinds of personalized services for each student, from enrollment to graduation. Through this round of exchange, many applicants gained a deeper understanding of BiMBA and what it offers, and also seemed to have found themselves in the vivid personal stories the alumni shared. Each and every one of them is writing different versions of life stories by making different decisions, and going out to explore different fields. The power of exchange and share lays in the fact that it helps a lost one find the direction of reason and rationality again.

BiMBA Alumni Sharing Workshop is an interactive platform provided by BiMBA for each prospective applicant to exchange and communicate. This event is committed to helping every applicant for MBA program ascertain his or her career plan and lifelong goal by means of the lively alumni sharing activity, thus enabling them to realize their ideals and aspirations by making good use of the integrated and internationalized platform--BiMBA. BiMBA alumni sharing workshop was successfully concluded for this semester. We hope more and more applicants join us and grow with our promising activity.
