Talking about Bloomberg, one would link it with “one of the world largest financial data service and news providers”, “Bloomberg terminals with color-coded keyboards”, “Mike Bloomberg as the mayor of the New York city”. These descriptions didn’t mean anything to me until I paid a visit to its Beijing News Bureau on April 15.
At the first sight, we were astonished by a big fish tank filled with rare specimens, modern office furniture in red and white, glass-walled conference rooms and an assortment of snacks and drinks. All of these seem to be too good to be true. I got a sense of feeling what Bloomberg is in terms of corporate culture - dynamic, people-oriented, transparent and non-hierarchical.
In the following couple of hours, the HR Manager from Singapore, Jeslyn gave us a thorough introduction of the company and even trained us on how to use its terminals, which went beyond my expectation. Bloomberg first started with its financial data service by receiving subscription from investors to its software analytical tools and expanded its business portfolio to include financial news services in later years. Bloomberg has its own terminal featured with a special color-coded keyboard. With one “help” button, it can connect you directly with its 24-7 customer service centers. Any of your questions will be surely answered with patience and sincerity. No wonder Bloomberg had 250,000 installations of this product worldwide by 2006.
Another business of Bloomberg is to provide first-hand accurate news. One news line popped up every couple of seconds when we flipped to the News page. Even though it was only established in 1990, it has grown to be one of the largest global news agencies and has presence in more than 140 countries. Bloomberg News covers multimedia like TV, radio and internet. Similar to its other business, Bloomberg News has become a trusted information source for many people.
After the 2-hour fruitful training, we had a very good understanding of its business. Each of us left Bloomberg with satisfaction and dreams of working in a first-class company alike.
