Career Talk: Sparks of Thought When Students of Two Countries Meet

Apr 18-2013

On March 11, 2008, students from New York University and BiMBA had an excellent career talk on the second floor of Wanzhonglou, Peking University. Heated discussions and indepth communications were made between the students of the two countries on career-related topics, which are their common interests.

Mr. Tony Liu presided over the meeting. He first invited Ms. Jenny Liu to deliver a welcome speech, who extended a sincere welcome to the visiting delegation of teachers and students from New York University on behalf of all BiMBA faculty and students. In her speech, Jenny  also gave a brief introduction to the employment situation of BiMBA graduates over the past few years.

Jenny commented that one of the greatest features in BiMBA graduates' employment over the past few years was the diversity of their career selection. About 10% of the graduates would choose to start their own businesses after graduation and around 80% of them would find their jobs in multinational companies or renowned foreign companies, mainly in their sales and marketing departments. Some of these 80% graduates will engage in fiscal and financial business, for example, investment banks or consultancy companies. The current high employment rate of BiMBA graduates attributes to the government's support. One example is that the government has invited Professor Justin Yifu Lin from CCER to work for it. This has also proved that the government is determined and eager to realize its fiscal targets. At the same time, the government is increasingly opening its financial and economic markets. Recent years have witnessed fast growth in the number of financial institutions in the field of investment and securities and satisfying speed of capital accretion. In this way, excellent graduates have sound career options and much room for further development, but competitions among graduates are also intensifying. This is shown in the fact that some large companies, while recruiting staff, will arrange several rounds of tests including interviews, written and oral tests, and the fiercest competitions are still found among the graduates from top domestic universities, especially those majoring in economics and finance.

As for the career site selection, most graduates tend to find jobs in Beijing and Shanghai, mainly for the two cities' diversified background, various corporate types and multiple employment opportunities. Of course, some of the excellent graduates prefer to find their jobs in multinationals that have overseas branches or companies or can provide overseas training programs as a compensation for their failure to receive education overseas. Before conclusion, Ms. Liu introduced briefly the two options of BiMBA program. The students can select full-time course in which they have to finish the course in a limited period. Or they can select the part-time course in which they can have their study in their spare time, mainly on weekends. Most of the students in MBA have had the working experience of more than 6 years. They attend the course because they intend to renew their knowledge after finding that they lack certain theory or knowledge in their work.

After Ms. Liu's speech, senior students from New York University and BiMBA students had a free talk. Students of both parties introduced themselves, hoping to finding their counterparts in the other party with similar academic background and hobbies for further communication. All students were pleased and excited that they could get acquainted with so many friends with different background and life experience and they could learn others' funny stories. One BiMBA trainee from Russia told her story of attending an MBA course in CCER of Peking University, saying she hoped to receive enlightenment and influence of thought in China, a power of civilization. She added that the valuable certificate would offer her an international background and would benefit her future employment. Amy from New York University shared her understanding of the difference between sales department and marketing department. She holds the view that sales are a chain relating to results in the later period of products and that sales people must communicate and contact with customers in a free way, while marketing is a process in the former period of products and that marketing people must find what kind of products are worth developing. Although the two departments have similar duty requirements for their staff, there is a great difference between them. She hoped that the students should make the right option when they select careers in the future.

They also expressed their opinions on some hot topics, such as "how to balance work and life". Although the students from two countries grow up in different environments, they all mentioned men and women play different roles and invest different time in families because they have different tasks in the society. That's why we have to think over what we need most, what we pursuit and what our life goals are before making options. When discussing the topic "what is the best occupation", Chinese students believe that investment banks and consultancies are best career options because of salaries,

opportunities and challenges. Besides, the bright career expectation can guarantee more options for further development. However, the students from USA think that working in investment banks and other high-end financial companies will not only cost their health, but also take away their opportunities to enjoy life and the time and energy with their family members. Unless they love the career from the bottom of the heart, they won't sacrifice the most valuable youth simply for its high salaries. Instead, they prefer to find jobs that they love most and that are suitable for them.

Everyone present felt that they have learnt a lot from the discussion. They have understood the influence of cultures and environment on career selection. Besides, they have learnt to think from different perspectives. What's more important, they have found that people from other countries are puzzled by the same problems that they face. Through discussions, the students were relieved of their mentality pressure caused by employment, encouraging each other to work hard to realize their dreams.

Before conclusion, BiMBA teachers answered in patience and in detail the questions raised by students from New York University about China's environment of employment. They asked questions puzzling them; for example, whether they can have Hukou if they come to work in China; whether their jobs can be retained when they choose to renew their education in schools after they have started their work; and China's relevant employment policies regarding foreign graduates who intend to seek jobs in China. After the questions were answered, the New York University students said that they would like very much to seek jobs in China and experience in person the prospering economy of China. At the same time, they expressed the hope of receiving education in BiMBA in the future.

The meeting was fruitful. All students have understood what other countries are like and have also learnt many new concepts and ideas. At last, every student received a Chinese Fuwa as a souvenir before they had a group picture taken.
