—On the 2007 “Love Relay” Charity Auction Evening
November 24th, 2007, the first weekend after the Thanksgiving Day, was a special day for the faculty and students of BiMBA. Despite the cold temperature of the winter night, Langrunyuan was filled with life and laughter. The 2007 “Love Relay” charity auction evening opened at Wanzhong Building, and received great support from the enthusiastic BiMBA faculty and students.
Before this one, the “Love Relay” charity auction evening had been held for 4 years. The charity spirit of BiMBA has been passed on year after year, and now embraced its fifth anniversary. The auction evening of this year was jointly held by three classes, namely, 06Part Time,06EMBA and 07EMBA of the school, and was the largest and most expected. The preparation and massive warm-up exhibition had received wholehearted support from all faculty and students of BiMBA, whose universal and enthusiastic participation lent an exceptionally fervent atmosphere to this evening.
For the third time, Professor John Yang, U.S. Dean of BiMBA, attended the “Love Relay” charity auction evening and delivered the opening speech. After a brief introduction of the origin and history of this charity auction evening, he elaborated on the significance of this activity. Firstly, the social responsibility of enterprises is primarily manifested by the charity spirit and deeds of entrepreneurs. Secondly, now people in China are all thinking about humane education (essential-qualities-oriented, instead of exam-oriented education or professional training), and BiMBA differs from other MBA programs in its emphasis on such education. BiMBA believes that only those with noble character and benevolence can gain respect from others in the society.
Finally, social responsibility should never be regarded as a burden on an enterprise. A brand nourished by its social responsibility will surely grow ever stronger. Professor Yang especially noted BiMBA’s trend of becoming ever more international, and extended his warm welcome to the international students at the evening and highly commended them for their excellent qualities.
This evening focused its attention on the survival and education of Chinese children. The donation raised at the evening would be used to help Liuliu, a child leukemia patient from a poor family and other children who suffer a similar fate.
Liuliu, a lovely boy less than 5 years old, has the same innocent smile on his face, but is suffering much more hardship and pain than his peers. Before he was able to save his elder brother from the hand of death, for which he was born, in 2006, little Liuliu was diagnosed to be also infected with leukemia.
Though he was lucky to find the matching cord blood and receive some donation from some kind people, with which his family managed to have his operation done, his family could never afford the expensive post-operation medicine and checks. Seeing the emaciated and pining mother and little Liuliu gazing at the world with his curious eyes on the video screen, all participants of this evening felt heartbroken with deep sympathy. To help Liuliu to survive was now not only the wish of his parents, but that of everyone present at the evening.
Upon invitation from BiMBA, Mr. LIU Zhengshen, founder of PKU Sunshine Marrow Bank, the first non-government marrow bank in China, also presented himself at the evening. As a graduate from the first minor class of CCER, Mr. LIU Zhengshen feels strong attachment to CCER and its alumni. At the evening, he shared with the attendants the history of Sunshine Volunteers Association and Sunshine Marrow Bank of Beijing University. From frustration and doom to miracles created by love and sense of mission, his personal experience is legendary and touching, and so is that of the Sunshine organization. Upholding its aim of “Professionalism, Responsibility, Faith, Love and Mission”, the life-saving organization Sunshine has helped numerous people, and its love is now spreading even further. The demonstrated photos, no matter that of the 88 villagers of Xiyuan Village who collectively registered as donors to the marrow bank or that of the first marrow donor and the beneficiary tearfully embracing each other, all deeply moved the participants of the evening.
The secondary theme of this evening was donation for education. Since its birth in 2003, the “Love Relay” charity auction evening has carried on the BiMBA’s spirit of serving the society and continuously lent a hand and given love to school dropouts and retarded children. The evening of this year also inherited this tradition. Invited by the evening organizers, Mr. CHEN Youzhong, founder of “Yanxing Beida” (PKU Wild Goose Flight, meaning “PKU No Child Left Behind”) program and Mr. LI Yaping attended the evening and made a speech on this theme. The “PKU No Child Left Behind” program was initiated by CHEN Youzhong, DI Hongwei and LI Jianjun, all students of the 2002 EMBA class of BiMBA, and was actively participated and strongly supported by the other students of the class. This program aims to help the poor students of Beijing University to overcome economic difficulties so that they can smoothly accomplish their college education. Presently, however, this program has expanded to cover Tsinghua University, the People’s University of China, Beijing Normal University and No.2 Middle School of Anyang City. Till now, the program has helped over 400 poor students. The evening of this year paid special attention to education of poor students and planned to donate a lab furnished with second-hand computers to Yangdiba Primary School located in the remote and mountainous Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, of which the students yearn for equal opportunity for education.
With the staging of the first auction lot, Ultimate Happiness, a personally signed autobiography of Mr. LIU Zhengshen, the auction officially kicked off. The buyer of this auction article would get as gifts a tennis ball signed by some sports stars and two VIP tickets for the fifth charity performance of the Sunny organization. Encouraged by such allurements as well as the agitating words of the host and auctioneer, everybody was ready to bid. No sooner had the host finished his announcement of the beginning did the participants raise their bidding signs. Through competitive bidding, the price of the auction lot started from 600 yuan but soared to 2500 yuan, at which it was bought by a student from EMBA06, giving the auction evening a good omen.
Professor Yang has always been generous with BiMBA’s charity auction, and this time he donated a Balin Odd Stone (a Chinese ancient seal), some Olympics souvenir silver coins, and a glassware piece entitled “Two Geese Dabbling Water”. These articles caught enthusiastic attention and caused round after round of heated bidding, leading the auction to a minor climax.
The hand-painted wood bowl made by the Pumi ethnicity, which was auctioned at record prices in previous sessions of the charity auction, had been donated for auction again this year, and was bought by Mr. TIAN Han, a student of Class EMBA07. It is worth mentioning that Mr. TIAN Han was very active and eye-catching at the evening. He totally bought 5 articles at a total price of 59000 yuan. What’s more, he donated all the bought articles to his class, part of which will be used as prizes for the New Year evening of the class. It now looks like their New Year evening this year will be really worth expectation.
Pu’er tea of the “Harmonious Family Breeds Career Success” brand, copies from the collection of a “CCER Mysterious Bibliophile”, T-shirts bearing YAO Ming’s signature, a model of the “Bird Nest” stadium for the Beijing Olympics, all sorts of arts and crafts, red wine bottles customized for the BiMBA charity activity…the auction lots were diverse and voluminous.
However, the most unique “auction lots” must be those, actually some services, donated by the international students of BiMBA. The students from South Korea would teach Korean, the U.S. students would teach business English, the Guatemalan students would teach Spanish for 20 hours, and the students from Thailand would teach Thai cooking, which were really original and unexpected. On top of that, their humorous words brought the charity evening to its zealous climax.
Present at the charity evening were also several special guests, several retarded children from Lizhi Rehabilitation School, who had received aid from the “Love Relay” charity auction evening in the past years. They brought their manually made crystal flowers and an embroidery piece named “Crane Flock”. The shiny and transparent crystal flowers were like their pure souls, and the elaborate and delicate embroidery reminded us of their adroitness. These children taught us a lesson on thanksgiving and inspired all kinds of feelings in our heart.
The auction evening lasted for more than 2 hours and raised a sum much larger than estimated, fully indicating the enthusiasm and sense of mission of BiMBA faculty and students as to reciprocating and contributing to the society. Besides, the charity evening also received 18 second-hand LCD computer monitors donated to Yangdiba Primary School by LI Zhenlin, a student of PT07, on behalf of his company. The host excitedly announced that the additional donation raised at the evening would be used to support Sunshine Marrow Bank of Beijing University and BiMBA’s “Langrun Hope Fund”. (The fund was launched by E03 at the eve of their graduation and has since donated PKU Langrun Hope Primary School at Baicao Town, Chicheng, Hebei Province, Caishi Middle School in Licheng District, Ji’nan City, Shandong Province, Caihua Yanyuan Hope Primary School in Jingmen City, Hubei Province, and Wuxiang Yanyuan Hope Primary School at the headquarters of former Eighth Rout Army in Shanxi Province. In name of this fund, Class 2004E donated Damiao Primary School in Kalaqin County, Chifeng City, Inner Mongolia, and Class 2005E donated a hope primary school in Wulanhot Prefecture, Inner Mongolia.)
The 2007 charity auction evening of BiMBA thus concluded in full success. “One is blessed to be helped, and is happy to help.” This cold winter night got warm for the love of the participants, who, on the other side, garnered greater happiness from their participation, contribution and commitment. May such beauty be relayed and spread all over the world!
