The farewell party for Professor Sean. X Chen
Apr 18-2013
(by part-time and full-time classes of BIMBA 2007)
Binghui, Yang from part-time class 1
He has two small eyes behind glasses but often blinking with wisdom.
He has a black beard seems like to be normally distributed.
He once was a Chinese student chasing dream in the new world but now is a U.S. professor speaking elegant English.
He has a special ability to convert profound theory into simple words and graph.
He can help his students to overcome the deep apprehension for Statistics and begin to love this boring subject in the first class.
He is young, an outlier among the professors, but surely an influential king among the students.
He is not a mean, but a mean lover.
This is Professor Chen’s portrait from the view of mine, a part-time middle aged man who has almost lost his passion and faith to the academia. You can not imagine where the enthusiasm comes from for the all three class committee members to prepare such a big farewell party to show our appreciation to Professor Chen. And yet you can not understand how many ladies have secretly changed their dreaming prince during their summer statistics class.
Yes, this summer is hot as usual in Beijing. But to most of my 2007 BIMBA classmates, this summer will be memorized as a special season in their whole life. In this summer, we are admitted as MBA students. Just after we struggled to be survived from the Accounting course, we found we were dropped into an even deeper swamp. Yes, this was actually what I felt when I faced the Statistics textbook which is as thick as a brick. I am sure that most of my classmates have heard the word of “statistics” here or there. But to many of us, Statistics is really one of the most challenging subjects in our MBA courses, and statisticians, to be frankly, are in a stereotype of serious, prissy and abnormal.
Then on the first Statistics class, came in the young, handsome and cool Chinese professor. In his debut Dr. Chen tried to persuade us that statistics is interesting and useful. In suspicion, I found two important information on his first class. One is that he still can speak Chinese, and the other is that we can throw away our textbook, what we need to do is just follow him and read his yellow syllabus (his favorite book).
Time goes by. After we can clumsily use several models to predict the trend of the capricious stock market with Chinese characteristics, we are facing the final exam and Prof. Chen will fly back to U.S. soon. Thus the three class committees are discussing a special event to show our thanks to Prof. Chen. The advice of a farewell party got a hot response. More than 80 classmates say they will join the party. I guess many of them also like to take this chance to know the beauties or cool guys from other classes.
So just after the statistics final exam on September 2nd, the two part-time classes and the full-time class hold the farewell party together for the Professor. About 100 classmates squeeze into the small bar, make it a place hard to move.
Prof. Chen says he is moved by our enthusiasm. He says he is impressed by our diligence in our study. He says communication is important for MBA students. He says he will be back again. He say he welcome us to go to Fordham University to visit our U.S. alumni. He says he has never seen such a big scene. His words are not as logical as his lecture, but he talks like an older brother. That makes some of the ladies a little more crazy.
Then we talk, we drink, we laugh, we sing, we dance, etc. for several times the roof seems to be exploded. No one pay attention to the roof, we just try our best to be remembered by the Prof and other classmates.
Samuel is remembered by his dress and fluent English.
Zhang Yan impressed us by a baritone song.
One guy is remembered by his audacity of asking for a “A” score.
A lady is remembered both by her beauty and Beijing opera.
The full-time classmates are remembered by their youth and confidence in their model show
……
I am sure some guys are more concerned about the response for specific target. Some people really build up closer relationship among classmates. They should thank all of us.
Happy time easy goes. The party in the afternoon goes as fast as the exam in the morning.
We are happy rather than sorrow, because we know the globe is small and the world is flat. Prof. Chen will come back soon, and we will visit him in New York. On the way to be an international Chinese, he is several steps before us. But we are also on the same road. With such a good example, what we need is just hard working, hard working and hard working.
Take care, Prof. Chen. Welcome home again. 常回家看看。
