On the morning of May 12th, 2007, an MBA/EMBA delegation from the University of Texas at Austin arrived at the Langrunyuan in Beijing University for a China Study Tour. The main activities of the tour include a theme speech delivered by Professor HAI Wen, Vice President of Beijing University and Vice Director of the China Center for Economic Research (CCER), a theme speech by Mr. CHEN, Sales Director of the 2008 Olympics Project Department of Siemens (China), and a summary meeting on the China Study Tour by the teachers and students of the University of Texas at Austin. The visiting guests also enjoyed an exquisite buffet in the Chinese style courtyard of the Langrunyuan, CCER.

At 9:00 a.m., Professor HAI Wen delivered a speech on the “China economic development in 20 years” for the visiting guests from the University of Texas. In his report, Professor Hai pointed out that China would continue developing fast in next 20 years. He believed that there are many differences between China and Japan, East Asia and other once fast growing economies on the other, adding that these differences will enable China to create an economic miracle.

Firstly, the cost of labor force in China will remain extremely competitive in a fairly long period of time. Secondly, China itself is a huge market, in which the automobile and real estate industries alone can support the Chinese economy for another 20 years. Thirdly, China is constantly reforming and improving its systems, which will serve to foster a sound environment for economic development. And lastly, China’s accession to the World Trade Organization has helped to open up broader international markets for the country. Professor Hai also analyzed the challenges facing China. He summed up the challenges in four major aspects. First, in the macro sense, the fluctuation of the Chinese economy is not completely a result of economic actions, but is influenced by government interference, which is a big concern. Second, in the micro sense, economic globalization brings shocks to the competitiveness of Chinese enterprises. Third, in political and social stability, many problems still exist in terms of income gap, medical care and education in China. Fourth, in international climate, the development of the Chinese economy will impose pressure on other countries, and this naturally gives rise to even higher requirements for the handling of international relations in politics, economy and etc.  Professor Hai’s speech aroused heated reactions among the MBA/EMBA students from the University of Texas, who put forward quite a few sharp questions. Many students even surrounded Professor Hai after the report, discussing on the relevant issues.

After a short break, Mr. Tim Chen, who graduated from the BiMBA program of Beijing University in 2006, also delivered a speech, which is entitled “Analysis of the 2008 Beijing Olympics”. Mr. Chen gave them an overview of the 2008 Beijing Olympics from the perspectives of urban planning, communication development and others related to the Olympic. He even made a detailed analysis of the customer composition of the Olympic market, predicting that the GDP of Beijing will increase to RMB 700 billion in the year 2010.

After having a happy lunch buffet at the Langrunyuan, the MBA/EMBA teachers and students of the University of Texas at Austin had a summary meeting and discussed about their tour in China. China left deep impressions on their minds, and many of these impressions are positive. For instance, Beijing is a beautiful city and the Chinese people are very friendly. In the meantime, they also saw some disadvantages here in China: environmental pollution, public ethics and etc. Their other impressions includes that Chinese foods are really delicious.

BiMBA extended warm welcome to the MBA/EMBA guests from the University of Texas at Austin, and hoped that the exchanges and cooperation between two sides will be strengthened in the future. It also hoped that all the teachers and students will visit China and Beijing University again if possible.
