Planning Your Career Path-TESCO Human Resources Experts Talk about Career Planning and Development
Apr 18-2013
Human Resources experts from TESCO Property visited Langrun Garden on June 17, 2009, where they held in-depth discussions with BiMBA students on the issue of career planning from the perspective of the demand of enterprises for talented people. The students also received professional advice on relevant issues, which would be invaluable for them after graduation.
As the discussions started, Tonia, HR director of TESCO, made a brief introduction about the vacant posts open for application, followed by detailed explanations about post responsibilities and requirements for the candidates. She told the students that not only did they come for recruitment, but they were also interested in discussing career planning-related issues with the students. Her words aroused even more enthusiasm among the audience.
The first question asked by the students was quite representative—“Given the ongoing economic crisis, it is very difficult for fresh graduates to find satisfactory jobs. So, does it mean that they will have to compromise their original plans for the sake of employment?” One of Tonia’s colleagues, Mr. Gary, answered the question. Instead of replying to the question directly, he asked the student what was her expectation for career development in the next five years, and with that, he proceeded to talk about the importance of career planning. Gary used his own story as an example. He used to work in a well-known international HR consultancy company before he joined TESCO. He changed his job for a better long-term career prospect. In terms of career selection, it is of vital importance that you choose employers whose corporate cultures suit you best. In other words, you must choose employers whose understanding of management is similar to that of yours, and this is of decisive significance for the career development of job seekers in the long run. Gary stressed that “Job interviews are a two-way process in which the companies evaluate your suitability for the jobs, and you are entitled to choose the most suitable companies as well. Only those who are professional and willing to improve the career prospects of the employees are really good employers.”
Asked about how to write CVs, Tonia and Gary talked about their experience in CV selection as HR officers. In order that your CV can outshine from the competitors' and catch the attention of the recruitment officer, you must learn to speak with previous “achievements”, to be more precise, concrete and quantifiable achievements. Tonia emphasized that it is the job for HR officers to select from hundreds—sometimes even tens of hundreds—of CVs on a daily basis. Therefore, “why you are different” is a problem worth considering by all job applicants.
Not only were the discussions interesting and convincing, but the two TESCO experts also managed to interact effectively with BiMBA students present. Having inquired about the background of the audience, they analyzed, together with the students, cases of successful and unsuccessful job applications made by their classmates or friends. The seminar lasted only for a little over one hour. Even though, the students became fully aware of the unique corporate culture of TESCO, and gained a lot of valuable experiences which would definitely give them an advantage over their competitors on the job market after graduation.
