Visit to Shuren School for Migrant Worker’s Children
Apr 18-2013
May 7, 2010 , Beijing —— Members of the Peking University International MBA program’s Charity Club started the first “Global Classroom” activity at the Shuren school for migrant worker children (树仁打工子弟学校) in Southern Beijing.
The initiative is an amazing experience which was the brainchild of Professor Xie Yi, a Professor of Peking University and founder of the NGO, “Yi’s Wind”. Xie Yi wanted to create a cross-cultural platform for a cultural dialog with Chinese students, to help broaden their perspectives of the world from a young age.
After well preparation, Calvin, Godfrey and Donna, representing Singapore, Costa Rica and Germany respectively from Peking University International MBA program’s Charity Club set out for the Shuren school in Shijingshan on the 7th of May. They taught 45 enthusiastic 9 to 10-year old students how to say “hello” in 20 different languages, and tried to fix some misconceptions about life abroad.
They also introduced the respective countries, and compared and contrasted the lives of children in Europe, Central America and Southeast Asia, with Chinese children. The intention was to make these strange and foreign lands come alive in their minds, and to give them a window to life outside China. As the class came to an end, they took a group photo with the forty-five new friends.
We hope the “Global Classroom” initiative in Beijing could be continued, and to share the stories of the outside world to disadvantaged children. Doing so will not only enrich personal experiences, but more importantly, will provide support, hope and friendship to the lives of the young and the less fortunate in China.
