BiMBA Provides Free Cataract Surgeries in Qinghai

Apr 18-2013

BiMBA medical team offered free diagnosis and surgeries to cataract patients in Golog, Qinghai province on Aug. 10, 2012.

During the 10-day camp at Golog, the team received 1,180 patients and conducted 161 surgeries, all of which were successful. The age of patients ranged from 12 to 87.

Golog Tibetan autonomous prefecture is located in the southeast of Qinghai province, at an altitude of 4,200 meters; oxygen level in Golog is only three fifth of that at the sea level. With over 90% of its population being Tibetan, proportion of a particular ethnic group in the total population is the highest among all the 30 autonomous prefectures in China. Golog has experienced generally slow economic and social development, largely because of a harsh climate and a tough environment.

The BiMBA medical team consisted of 13 professional medical workers and 49 MBA/EMBA volunteers. Led by Zhang Xinru, 2009 EMBA alumnus and Vice President of Shanghai Putuo District Center Hospital and Director of Department of Ophthalmology, the team included professors and students from BiMBA at Peking University, Dean Prof. Dayuan Hu and EMBA and MBA alumni. All doctors were experts in ophthalmology. The 67-year-old Prof. Chen Guohui led the outpatient reception, Cui Hongping and Kong Qingjian were responsible for the wards and Li Qingsong took charge of surgeries with the help of Zhao Peiquan, Xu Jianjiang, Zhang Xingru, Shen Xi and Rong Ao.

BiMBA team members had to face challenges of adjusting their habits to the tough climate, difficulties of goods transportation and especially altitude sickness. However, thorough preparation and team work resulted in all members managing to avoid sickness. They worked with few breaks, sometimes working as long as from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Initiated by BiMBA alumni in 2006, the program provides free cataract surgeries to patients in less developed areas in China every year, jointly with ophthalmology experts and volunteers from Shanghai.

In the past six years, the BiMBA medical team has been to Zuoqin County at Ganzi Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Sichuan province, Qinghe County in north Xinjiang province, Hezuo City at Gannan Tibetan autonomous prefecture in Gansu province, Jalaid Banner in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, Yuexi County at Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan province and Jiangchuan County at Yuxi in Yunnan province. These medical camps, in aggregate, have received a total of 4,368 patients and 559 surgeries have been conducted without any failure or complication.

All medical equipment, materials, medicines and funds were donated by BiMBA students and alumni, ophthalmology experts from Shanghai and other philanthropists, without involvement of any charity foundation. All team members went to these remote areas in person, aiming to make full use of the money. This charity event was crowned as an example of charitable activities in China.
