A batch of new full-time class students entered Langrun Garden in September. Each year, BiMBA welcomes new students with an outdoor training program. This year, their destination is Huangcaoliang.

Huangcaoliang is located in the north of Zhaitang Town at Mentougou district, Beijing. Crowned as the “Pearl on the ancient road”, Huangcaoliang is adjacent to Lingshan, Baihua and Miaofeng mountains. The main peak is 1,773 meters above the sea level, which used to be a well-known guerrilla battle field in the 1930s and 1940s.

Dean Prof. John Yang invited the students for a rally after the leadership course, on the morning of 19 September 2012. The Full-time MBA students were all excited about the upcoming event.

The team set off at 1:30 p.m. for the destination. After a three-hour trip, they first arrived at Cuandixia, a famous tourism village in Zhaitang Town. Dating back to over 400 years ago, Cuandixia still maintains more than 70 well preserved buildings called Siheyuans (Chinese quadrangles), built in Ming and Qing dynasties. The movie Warlourds was shot here. Native students volunteered to explain the history and culture of this scenic spot to students from abroad.

A gala event took place after the dinner. Students were divided into seven groups, each of whom performed a well-prepared self-conceived show. The gala heated up with the red scarf of the elder “young pioneers”, cute “evils”, Xuanzang and his three protectors from the Journey to the West, imitation of a BiMBA class, hot dances in both Chinese and Western styles, tribes in New Zealand, chorus of a Chinese song entitled “rainbow in the rain” and presentation of some beautiful Indian headwear. Students therefore got a chance to know more about each other.

The team departed for Huangcaoliang the next day. Each member was issued an alpenstock. Team doctors provided tips and everyone did warm-up exercises under the guidance of professional climbers and experienced students. The team was divided into three groups before heading towards the mountain top.

BiMBA designed a new route based on an early-stage exploration under which each team would go up the mountain from one side and go down from another.

Students felt easy at the beginning, calling each other “evil” and “daozhang” as they did at the gala. However, as they continued to go forward, and especially as the slope became steeper, the team had to face the physical challenge. Members began to encourage each other.

Despite the difficulties met on the way, nothing stopped the BiMBA team. After three hours’ hard work, they managed to reach the peak without any case of injury. Everyone appreciated the beautiful scenery and took pictures of historic relics. They also learnt more about “outdoing themselves” as well as what “leadership” meant.

As the old saying goes, it’s easy to go up the mountain but not to go down. In order to build a sense of teamwork, BiMBA chose a less artificial road filled with soil and gravels. Based on the experience gained in the morning, students helped each other and completed the task of coming down four hours later.

The assistant at the foot of the mountain was ready with slices of watermelon to congratulate the students on their success and wished them success in more climbing expeditions in high mountains.
