The October get-together of BiMBA 03/04 MBA class alumni

By Jia Xiaokun

October 24th 2009, BiMBA - In late October 2009, when the whole nation was still immersed in a celebratory mood not long after the 60th anniversary of the founding of P.R.C, BiMBA invited 2003 part-time MBA class and 2004 full-time MBA class to get together in Langrun Garden, and arranged for them to visit Shiba Tan Pool, a picturesque scenic spot on the outskirts of Beijing, and to participate in a climbing activity aimed at outward development and attend a psychological decompression lecture considerately planned and organized by the school. Many alumni who were usually busy with their business or family affairs all returned to the campus, bursting with enthusiasm and immersed in fond memories of their alma mater and old classmates. Some other alumni based outside the city also made their special trip to head back. The familiarly beautiful autumn scene along the way, the joyful laughter and the warm ambiance induced each member of the returning alumni to walk down the memory lane, bringing them back to the wonderful days they spent on campus.

It is always sunny and cloudless during the late autumn of Beijing, with nice, agreeable outdoor temperature, so it is a perfect season for climbing and enjoying natural views. Early in the morning the working personnel of BiMBA already had warm breakfast ready for the returning alumni. Before the clock even struck eight, quite a number of alumni had already gathered in Zhi Fuxuan Hall. Some came all the way from such distant places as Shanghai, Nanjing and Wuhan; some cancelled their previous appointments and managed to squeeze a free half day into their hectic schedules. Having not seen each other for a long time, they huddled together, in twos and threes, earnestly catching up on another's current state of career and life. The arrival of Prof. John Yang, international dean of BiMBA, delightfully surprised these former students. They hastily approached and surrounded their former teacher, reporting to him what they had achieved over the past few years. Prof. Yang proudly acknowledged their accomplishments, and invited them to revisit the school more often in the future.

At 8:30 sharp, two coaches with the alumni aboard drove out of the campus and headed for Shiba Tan Pool located in the suburb of Beijing. Ms. Liu Jiali, Director of BiMBA Career Development Department, extended warm welcome to all participating alumni on behalf of the whole faculty of the school, informed them of the schedule of the day, and also assigned outward development tasks to each team. Enthusiastically interested, these newly arrived alumni started to launch into group discussions and formulate creative plans of action, all confident of winning the competition. This was a scene that was so reminiscent of the days when they were all earnestly curious and ambitious students in Langrun Garden. Upon completion of group discussions, some alumni started to grow "impatient". Qiu Xu, the first to rise and grab the microphone, exclaimed: "I suggest we take this opportunity to report on our development and changes over the past few years, I will go first!" Thus the session of "self introduction" was initiated, with the alumni starting to exchange their experiences, achievements and reflections in their life and work during these years: some became parents within the previous three years and are now living happily with their families; some have secured promising careers with upward momentum; some start up businesses of their own and have already made commendable achievements; some are taking care of their children full time and enjoying life now. Everyone has steadily moved ahead, gaining new experiences every day. Each of their stories is exciting and fun. Time flew fast during happy hours and the coaches soon arrived at the foot of Shiba Tan Pool.

After taking the group picture, all alumni commenced the day's climbing expedition, guided by a large BiMBA flag held by Zhang Cuizhu, a teacher of the alumni department. They were divided into four teams; each assigned a theme, i.e. sharing, balance, blessing and the third anniversary. They needed to demonstrate their relations with BiMBA and the theme of their team by taking pictures and coming up with story ideas while climbing. When appreciating the beautiful natural views, the alumni also engaged themselves in brainstorming, generating one creative idea after another. On the fence of the climbing trail can be found models of Thousand-hand Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which denoting the good wishes for a bright future for BiMBA and all of its alumni. By the Pool some generous alumni took out one-hundred-yuan notes to share the happiness of their affluence with others; Yin Tong, one of the alumni, a strongly built young man, can be seen standing firmly on one foot atop a stone peak. Many alumni also created the letters of BiMBA with their bodies on the climbing trail. All these creative ideas never failed to elicit joyful and hearty laughter. Their overflowing creativity and enthusiasm turned out to be very infectious too, and many regular tourists started to take pictures of them while some even joined the teams to savor their happiness. For lack of physical practice, they were soon covered with sweat and suffered with panting, but none of them ever gave up or fell behind too far. Fully enjoying the trip they all remarked, “I hope we have more opportunities like this in the future, so I can embrace the nature, breathe fresh air and see my old friends more often!”

Tasks and view appreciation done, the teams began to pack up and head down. After a tiring morning they then drove to the scenic Loyalist College not far away, where lavish lunched was ready. After a brief opening ceremony, the alumni all took their seats and started to enjoy the delicious Peking food, all the while drinking to each other and exchange fun anecdotes of the morning. The prize award ceremony during the lunch session pushed the activity to yet another climax. Representatives of each team went onto stage and explained in a fun and vivid manner the stories behind each picture taken. The creative ideas and fun stories drew bursts of cheering applause and laughter. Finally, after the evaluation of the teachers present, the awards for best creative idea, best style, best team and lifelong achievement all went to respective winners. The hearty lunch and exquisite prizes added a terrific ending to the morning's exhausting yet rewarding activity.

After the lunch break, the alumni headed to the conference hall of the Loyalist College to attend a psychological decompression lecture specially organized by BiMBA. The school invited Prof. Zhong Jie, a famous psychologist from the Department of Psychology, Beijing University to deliver the lecture, who would offer psychological tutorial and decompression courses in response to those psychological problems most of the modern white-collar workers are faced with. Prof. Zhong's lecture was informative and fun, with one ingenious decompression method after another pushing the occasion to a climax. The alumni also began to practice on the spot those methods recommended by Prof. Zhong, learning how to do abdominal breathing and keep a balanced diet while exchanging compression experiences. After the lecture, they all felt they had released some negative emotions long bottled up inside of them, and noticed that Prof. Zhong's lecture was long overdue, and very useful in helping them better adjust to life and get back to work with a refreshed state of mind.

When the lecture concluded, the night had already fallen. Having spent a tiring yet rewarding day, the alumni headed back to the city. Still overwhelmed with excitement and seized with longing, they all expressed heart-felt thanks to BiMBA for organizing such a meaningful activity. The day reminded them of their school days at BiMBA. Although they were now working in different fields, at different positions, in different places, they knew whatever lies ahead, they always have each other to fall back on. Tomorrow will be a better day.
