“Belief is the spirit of a company; this is what all entrepreneurs should consider. Starting a company is not to make money or publicly list, but to truly make it a business, it’s as important as breathing. I hope to make Global Intellect Consulting a century-old company, so that many generations can benefit from it.” Yu Haoyang

At 4pm on 3 July, 2014 in a unique office in the China Elec Plaza, just one road away from New Oriental, Global Intellect Consulting’s President, Yu Haoyang is speaking in fluent English to a young man from the United States. This young man is a founding partner of the famous American education company InGenius Prep. This young man, who had previously earned full points in the LSAT American Assoication of Law Schools entrance exams, was invited to China by Yu Haoyang to provide consulting services for Chinese students aiming to study abroad.

In the room are dozens of parents and prospective students. Each time a parent asked a question Yu Haoyang must translate it into English, then translate the answer into Chinese. This smooth transitioning is something Yu Haoyang does comfortably. In her student days, she won top prizes in many English speech competitions. In 2006 she joined New Oriental in her 8 years as a teacher not only helped her English reach new levels but she also became, along with one of the ‘Four Great Teachers’ of New Oriental. Just as her career was reaching its zenith at New Oriental, Yu Haoyang decided to change direction and begin her journey on the path of entrepreneurship.

“I really enjoy every moment in my company. It’s the way of life that I want.” When asked why she started a business, Yu Haoyang told the reporter. “From a teaching perspective, there is little difference between New Oriental and GIC. But at GIC, I can express my understanding of education much more freely.””

Don’t use one method of selecting people

As far as education goes, Yu Haoyang has staunch beliefs. In her opinion, parents play an essential role in a child’s education. For children’s learning, the most important thing is to grasp learning points, not to learn purely for high grades. The formation of this belief comes from Yu Haoyang’s own experience.

Her upbringing was not strict and she was never reproached by her parents on account of her grades. Growing up, she never felt she was worse than anyone else just because she did not get the grades to enter a prestigious university. It was this upbringing that planted in her a healthy and joyful seed; a seed that she now wants to spread. “I don’t want students to come to GIC with the sole aim of getting into a prestigious school or to get high grades; what we want to do is to discover each child’s potential and talent.”
At GIC, Yu Haoyang emphasises the importance of reading, listening and writing and has created respective training camps to improve these skills. This is rarely seen in overseas study training companies, which typically concentrate on TOEFL and SAT training.

Yu Haoyang completed her MBA studies at the National School of Development at Peking University’s BiMBA Program. A major factor that helped her enter BiMBA was her exceptional spoken English. “Spoken English skills are built upon a large amount of reading. Those whom I admire within my industry are those who are strong in both reading and speaking. Spoken language is very important in the US, I believe to the extent that it is essential for survival; it’s very, very important.” Yu Haoyang admitted that she was not a top student, but this does not mean that she can’t make a valuable contribution to society. “The reason why I chose to start my own company was because I felt that my understanding of education could give students more choices. Each and every child has a wonderful story, it’s just that we do not have the patience to listen to them.”
GIC’s new programme, ’Elite Road’,can be seen as the continuation of New Oriential’s ‘Elite Plan’, but using GIC’s platform is to operate the ‘Elite Plan’ is the way of being Yu Haoyang wishes for.

Life must be lived to the full
As a teacher at New Oriental, Yu Haoyang had to lecture well and implement teaching plans. Today at GIC, she not only has these responsibilities but must also lead her team to propel the company forward. Changing roles is something that many feel is difficult, but for Yu Haoyang it is a great pleasure. To lead a team is something that she has always been good at. When she was 5, she would lead a group of friends in playing all kinds of games. Once when playing hide and seek, she hid in a neighbour’s house. So that her friends wouldn’t find her, she sat on a stove and burnt herself so badly it took a week to recover. “To achieve what you want, you need to be brave and change roles. No matter what role that is, you must live it to the fullest.”
At New Oriental, Yu Haoyang’s was most comfortable teaching in front of 400 students ; at GIC, meeting Suo Ning was a happy occasion; in starting a company, having the support of parents and students is what makes Yu Haoyang feel joyous.

Unlike many teachers, she would require high school students to read the Wealth of Nations; to write reading reviews; she would share one thing new that she learnt each day with her students. “I hope that my belief will be shown by my vitality – why can you achieve? Why are you able? It is down to your vitality. Vitality includes continuous learning, continuously trying new things, then sharing these new things with those around you, using your positivity and charm.

Entrepreneurship requires a good partner
Without Suo Ning, Yu Haoyang may not have decided to be an entrepreneur so early. There is an old Chinese saying:‘Time is not as important as terrain, and terrain is not as important as relationship with people’. GIC was built on Yu Haoyang’s years of experience in education – without this, the requirement of ‘time’ would not have been satisfied; without funding, ‘terrain’ would not be satisfied and, according to Yu Haoyang, ‘relationship; is her business partner, Suo Ning, who was also once her student. As far as education is concerned, they have the same values; that education is not a target, but rather to have a number of choices. This is what makes their partnership work so well at GIC.

“When choosing a business partner, it is important to find someone with complementary skills; if you have a weak spot, it is essential to find someone strong in this area. Attention to detail, rigorous, hardworking and modesty are all of Suo Ning’s strong points and he can make up for many of my weak points. I am not detail-oriented,   and a lot of the time my mind will change and to realise many of my changing thoughts requires really strong implementation.” Yu Haoyang said before, that her focus was mainly on teaching and did not know much about entrepreneurship; BiMBA’s MBA course and in particular her classmates and guest speakers helped her a lot. Entrepreneurship is not just what you do, but with whom you do it. New Oriental’s story is a great example. She told the reporter,”Suo Ning was once my student then became a great friend and now he is my business partner, on the same team. Despite this, we debate on many issues and will have differing ideas but we believe that as long as our direction is the same, we will be able to move forward.

Suo Ning, the partner who Yu Haoyang delights in mentioning, is only 25 years old. However his is much stricter, harder working, attentive and responsible than most his age. In the words of Yu Haoyang, he is a‘very dependable’ partner. “Suo Ning was responsible for the whole company’s renovation, he spent many nights sleeping at the construction site and once, he was woken by the cold at night and switched on the LOGO light to lie on for warmth.  It’s something that’s commendable for today’s ‘post-90s generation.”

This young partnership has not only invigorated those around them, but also moved investors. Maybe this is because the passion they exhibit is exactly that which investors are looking for. When working on this project, their passion has infected those around them. “The key to winning the trust of investors is to make them believe we can succeed.”

In 2008, as part of New Oriental’s ‘Elite Plan’, Yu Haoyang successfully helped a number of students enter foreign top-ranked schools: Renmin University’s affiliate middle school student Zuo Tong, who entered Harvard University; Renmin University’s affiliate middle school student Fu Xiao who entered Standford University, Kang Le who entered Harvard University, Jiang Mengzhou etc.

Yu Haoyang maintained the importance of belief in a company and believes it is the key factor in a company’s future success. “Belief is the spirit of a company; this is what all entrepreneurs should consider. Starting a company is not to make money or publicy list, but to truly make it a business, it’s as important as breathing. I hope to make Global Intellect Consulting a century-old company, so that many generations can benefit from it.”

As for GIC’s future plans, Yu Haoyang :”As long as you are clear now, the future will be clear. Being an entrepreneur is what I love and is something I can keep on doing.

[MBA Entrepreneur List] will interview BiMBA alumni on the entrepreneur’s path and will share with readers their experience. We welcome alumni to provide your own material to share with us your entrepreneur story.
