Prof. Justin Lin: Opportunities for BiMBA Students Today

As the honorary dean of the National School of Development (“NSD”) at Peking Univesrity, Professor Justin Lin expressed his best wishes and welcomed the new MBA candidates to the school in person. He said the young of today are particularly fortunate, with more opportunities to pursue their own career paths. Currently, China’s strong economic environment has afforded MBA students plenty of room for career development. The strong faculty at the NSD can help MBA students better judge the latest political situation and to join the programme is to join a group of outstanding students – classmates can learn from each other and make a their own contribution to the Chinese Dream.

Good morning professors and dear students,Today is very important day for you. And I am honored to have the opportunity of sharing some of my thought with you. I like to say today it reminds me of 40 years ago, I was also a student of a MBA program. But compared to what I had 40 years ago I must say you are much luckier than I was. For three reasons.

The first one, you have much a better opportunity to pursue your career to realize your dream than I had 40 years ago. Because you are going to work in a country, which is the most dynamic in the world. As you know, I often predicted, China had the potential to grow continually at the 7% or 8% growth in upcoming decades and more. And China will be the largest economy no matter you measure that by purchasing power parity or by market exchange and the largest market economy with such a dynamic growth in the past, certainly the business opportunity will increase in rapid rate. And we will offer you the best potential to realize your dream in your career. As I mentioned in other speech that by the time of 2020 or 2030s, China will have the largest number of the fortune 500 companies. I started to pay attention to these figures in 2002. As that time, there were only 11 Chinese companies listed in this fortune 500. As that time I predict, by the time of 2030, China will overtake the US to have the largest number. With the time 2002, US had the 198, and China only 11. So most people thought I was too optimistic, but I like to say in my dream it was already half realized. Because last year, if I remember correctly, the fortune 500 Chinese companies already increased to 80, and I think by the time of 2030, your prime time in the career China will have at least 150 and more than number in US has at that time. And also many of you, maybe the CEO, the chairman the chairwoman of fortune top 500. So you have a much better opportunity than I did in Taiwan.

The second one, certainly, this market opportunity is not so easy to capitalize. You need to have the right knowledge to understand the rise and the down, the fluctuation, in order to capture the opportunities. Knowledge is the most important weapon for you to capture the opportunities. Not only the common knowledge, you need to understand the chain of the world; you also need to know specific knowledge about a transitional economy like China, and for this knowledge, I am proud to say the development economics has the large concentration of the masters of the Chinese economy in the whole world. And if you read their writings understand their thinking although they are debating with each other all the time, I am sure you can make the best judgment to capitalize on this opportunity. And this is lucky you, you select this school to come to this MBA program. This program I did not have when I was a MBA student 40 years ago. This is the advantage you have compared to any other program in China and also in the world. This is second reason, I think you are lucky.

And the third one is that the program you have not only you come here to learn from your professors, but also you learn from your students, your fellow students. Our program is not large, but I like to say our program is the best, and it is already been ranked by third party consistently we are the best MBA program in China; we are the best MBA program to understand China in the whole world. And you have group of thousands of fellow students, I am sure they will be your team members in your career to stimulate each other, to help each other, and to explore this opportunity together.

So with this, my congratulations for you to join this program, and I am looking forward to see it that you do realize your dream, and also make a contribution to the realization of Chinese dream. Thank you.
