The 2018 Graduation Ceremony of Peking University National Development Research Institute and Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development

in June 24, 2018, the 2018 graduation ceremony of the National Development Research Institute of Peking University and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development was held at the Peking University Centennial Hall. More than 1,000 graduates and their relatives, and over 40 professors attended the ceremony. The graduation ceremony of Peking University National School of Development was presided over by Professor Huang Yiping, Vice President of Peking University National School of Development.




Yao Yang, Dean of Peking University’s National School of Development and Executive Dean of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development, delivered a speech. Professor Yao Yang reported to the audience that the 2018 Peking University National School of Development had achieved great results in teaching and educating people: the total number of graduates reached 1,067, including 6 doctors in economics, 29 masters in economics and management. The Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development has 23 masters of public administration, 90 senior masters of business administration EMBA, 177 masters of business administration MBA, 8 PPE economics majors, 700 economics double degrees and 34 economics minor subjects.


When confronted with the question of poetry and future, as well as the present mediocrity and "appeasement", should Peking University National School of Development graduates stick to idealism or return to reality? In this regard, Yao Yang took Shakyamuni and Confucius as examples and encouraged students to "live with poetry and looking forward", face up to life's "survival", adheres to ideals and forges ahead.

Zhang Dandan, a teacher representative from the National School of Development and young scholar from Mulan, delivered a speech. As a teacher, Zhang Dandan has been thinking about how education can change a person and how to help a person grow up. “If you don’t engage in scientific research in the future, why should you have to undergo rigorous academic training?” In response to this question, Zhang Dandan’s answer is: In order to cultivate a spiritual quality of “not to bear with” and “not to compromise”. Individuals with such qualities will be aware of the freedom of thinking, the subtleties of life, and the opportunities of the era. She wished the graduates "to stick to the right path" in the future, without bearing with or compromise.

Students from the Peking University National School of Development's four major teaching programs, “Economics Master Project”, “Economics Double Degree Program”, “MBA Program” and “EMBA Program”, delivered speeches respectively.



The representative of Master and Doctorate graduate student quoted the phrase "China looks up to Peking University and Peking University looks up to National School of Development", which aroused widespread resonance among the audience and concealed the pride of a graduate of Peking University. He admits that the study at the National School of Development has won three great achievements: growth, gratitude and ideals.


Dong Yingwei, a student representative from double degrees in economics, expressed thankful to the National School of Development by "give me a whole spring - the second degree of study”, let her and her classmates begin to look at the phenomena happening in the real world with an objective eye.


MBA representative Jin Xu recalled the time spent studying for BiMBA. She believes that studying at Peking University is to "go out of the comfort zone", challenge the self, and calm down to create a better self.


EMBA representative Nie Lin said, “In the past two years, E16 has achieved a new high in EMBA academic completion rate and a charitable donation of over 4.5 million Yuan.” He is proud of his class's high learning enthusiasm and enthusiasm for social welfare. The years in the campus where their thoughts collided with academic masters became one of their best memories

Peking University National School of Development invited Dr. Rao Yi, a professor at Peking University, director of the Faculty of Science, and deputy director of the School Board to speak at the ceremony. As a scientist, Rao Yi’s speech,entitled “Suspicion and Belief”, expressed his belief in the spirit of science. He believes that "the economic training for students can serve lofty ideals, and the evolution of human intelligence can create a better future."

The 1998 MBA Li Xinchuang, as alumni representative, welcomed the graduates who will join the alumni family. He encouraged the graduates to master the correct way of thinking, adhere to continuous learning, and maintain an optimistic attitude.
Wang Xiaotao, Director of the National Development Cooperation Agency; Gao Song, Executive Vice President of Peking University; Professor Lin Yifu, Dean of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development and Honorary Dean of Peking University Institute of International Development; Prof. Fu Jun, Academic Dean of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development, and representative of graduates of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development, Zambia's Derrick Sibeso Wina, also attended the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development graduation ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Yao Yang.


Gao Song gave a speech on behalf of Peking University. He said that Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development is a new symbol of Peking University's internationalization. Students from Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development also made important contributions to Peking University's internationalization through various activities. Peking University attaches great importance to the teaching of Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development. In the past 120 years, Peking University has made prominent academic achievements and accumulated rich experience in international teaching. It has trained outstanding graduates such as the current president of Ethiopia; Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development graduates are about to return to their motherland and embark on a new journey. I hope that this graduation will become a new starting point for their relationship with Peking University.

In his speech, Wang Xiaotao mentioned three years ago, Chinese President Xi Jinping pioneered the initiative to establish the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development during the United Nations 70th anniversary summit. Two years ago, Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development was formally established at Peking University; Today, Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development welcomes their second batch master's degree graduate. He shared with these students from South-South countries three ancient Chinese sayings: "Take persistent as the foundation and innovation as the approach", "What's learned from books is superficial after all. It's crucial to have it personally tested somehow",“Even mountains and seas cannot distance people with common aspirations”, to encourage everyone that it’s never too old to learn, flexibly applying the experience they have learned to their own country’s development, cherish the years of study in China, and become a new force for deepening South-South cooperation.


Derrick SibesoWina said in his speech it is a great honor to come to Peking University to learn the way of national development. Many students have changed their original plans and made sacrifices to study in China. But all of these are worth it. Their achievements in academics today are not only worth celebrating, but also as a responsibility and trust. They are willing to use what they have learned to build their own country and contribute to humanity.

In the degree awarding ceremony, Wang Xiaotao and Lin Yifu awarded the National Development Cooperation Agency Certificate and the Peking University Master's Degree Certificate to Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development graduates respectively. Peking University graduate school, master's degree, MBA, EMBA, and double degree graduates successively called upon to the stage, received the certificate from the professors and took group photo.


The graduation ceremony of the National Development Research Institute of Peking University and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development came to an end in the chorus of all teachers, students and relatives.
