Goldmine for Theoretical Innovations
Dec 26-2018
On December 19th, NSD Honorary Dean and Professor Justin Lin attended a symposium organized by Peking University to mark the 40-year anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up. On the previous day he had been presented the award Reform Pioneer for his theoretical innovations at a grand event by the CCCPC and the central government. In his speech at the symposium, he credited his accomplishments to the great era of reform and opening-up and the academic environment of Peking University. In 1988, China was confronted with inflation of 18.5%. Rather than hike the interest rate, which was a classical prescription of western theories, China succeeded in getting the house in order by suppressing many projects through administrative measures. This set off his reflections on the relationship between economic base and superstructure, and ultimately led to his neo-structural economic theories. Not to be missed on Prof. Lin’s accomplishment list is the founding of NSD in the 1990s, which has developed into a leading think tank and at the same time offers the best business education in China, BiMBA.
