Premiere's Meeting on Economic Situation

Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang convened a meeting on current economic situations on November 8th. NSD Professor Huang Yiping and senior visiting professor Wei Shangjin were among the selective group of experts tapped by the Premiere to offer insights and advice. Professor Huang, who is also deputy dean of NSD and a member of IMF external supervisory and consulting team, said that to cope with downward pressures on growth, the Chinese economy should mainly turn to private enterprises, which contribute a combined total of about 70% of all technological innovations in China. He pointed out that the business environment for private enterprises are not fully satisfactory, and suggested tilting relevant policies in favor of private enterprises so as to realize fair competition in real sense. After the meeting, Professor Huang said that there had been no taboos in the meeting and the Premiere highly valued and actively commented on the advice by the participants. "I think this kind of meeting is very good," he said.
