What could we trust in this difficult time of changes and uncertainties? This was the fundamental question to ask when we welcomed in 2019 and the future, said BiMBA Dean and Prof. Chen Chunhua during a recent summit by China Daily and Netease News. Her answer was to look inward and find the inner strength and composure. Sisyphus did just that and learned to live with his uphill battle. Taoism offered another lesson: everyone could blaze his own trail, which in essence was an evolution, she said. Then there’s this choice to make: open up, connect more, and achieve symbiosis. She gave the example of Haier, a home appliance giant, which had created an open ecosystem linking up with 400,000 “problem solvers”, i.e. researchers across the globe, to develop new and innovative products. Aim for value creation for customers, and aim for long-termism instead of opportunism, and you would have certainties on your side and a secure future, she said. Confused no more; keep calm and carry on!
