Decoding CODES Leadership

Leadership skills are in constant need of upgrading in this era of continuous change, so writes BiMBA Dean and Professor Chen Chunhua in her article for the latest issue of Tsinghua Management Review. She has identified the CODES model to define what she terms “Future Leadership”, based on her research into 23 companies and theories such as the exposition of Competency by Earnest Gunding. CODES stands for the five dimensions of leadership: Creativity, Open-mindedness, Dedication, Empathy, and Sagacity. Each dimension has its own characteristics and content. Leaders of the companies in her research all advocated learning from young people and staying away from past success and experience. Prof. Chen also points out that leadership skills should be mastered by all member of an organization, and not just confined to the selected few.
