Justin Yifu Lin Elected Fellow of the Econometric Society

Oct 19-2026

October 2026 — On October 8, the Econometric Society published the names of its 2026 Fellows. Professor Justin Yifu Lin, Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University, was among those elected.

Professor Justin Yifu Lin has been elected a Fellow of the Econometric Society, the Society announced on October 8, 2026 as it released its 2026 class of Fellows. He is Dean of the Institute of New Structural Economics at Peking University.

The Society

Founded in 1930, the Econometric Society is the largest and most highly regarded economics association in the world, and its membership gathers the discipline's foremost scholars. Its stated purpose has changed little in nearly a century.

“An international society for the advancement of economic theory in its relation to statistics and mathematics.”

In practice that mission asks economists to look beneath the surface of economic life: to apply the rigorous logic and structured methods of the natural sciences to questions that resist easy measurement, and to bring theoretical and applied quantitative work into a single frame. The Society's principal activities are the publication of Econometrica and other leading journals in the field; a monograph series in economics produced in partnership with Cambridge University Press; and the organisation of academic conferences across six world regions.

What Fellowship Means

Fellowship is the highest academic distinction the Society bestows. Candidates must have contributed original work to economic theory, or built a substantial record in applying mathematical and statistical methods to economic problems. New Fellows are elected by ballot of the existing Fellowship — a body that has remained deliberately small.

Since 1931, only 1,284 people have been elected in total. Ninety of them have gone on to win the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences.

A Record of Recognition

The election adds to a long record of international recognition. Professor Lin is a Foreign Fellow of the British Academy and a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences, formerly the Third World Academy of Sciences. He has also been honoured with:

  • the Schumpeter-Haberler Distinguished Fellow Award (2023), the highest honour conferred by the International Economic Association;

  • the Eurasia Business and Economics Society Fellow Award (2025);

  • Fellowship of the Chinese Economists Society;

  • Fellowship of the Chinese Economic Association (CEA) UK/Europe.

He holds honorary doctorates from twelve universities in China and abroad, among them the University of Clermont Auvergne, Fordham University, the University of Nottingham, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the London School of Economics and Political Science, the University of British Columbia, KU Leuven, Macau University of Science and Technology, the Education University of Hong Kong and SOAS University of London.
