Partha Ghosh: China on the Cusp of New Role

Aug 06-2019

The world is at a turning point and thoughts should be put into the new role of China, said Mr. Partha Ghosh in his recent lecture at NSD. He was invited by Prof. John Yang, Co-Dean of BiMBA Business School, to attend the 13th edition of PKU Cross-Cultural Leadership Forum.

Mr. Ghosh teaches Globalization and MNC Strategies at Tufts University and is known as an innovator of Business and Economic models. Stakes are high for the world, including China, in the next 20-30 years, he said.

On the macro-level, four tectonic shifts are playing out, including geopolitical complexity, the pivoting of global economic gravity center, imbalances in 3E (ethics, ecology, and equality), as well as the clashes among doctrines and ideologies.

On the micro-level, eight forces are shaping economic and societal evolutions, such as the integrating power of info technology in supply chains, neo-Nano technology, neural science and genetic engineering, among others.

Globalization is nothing new, he said. Current globalization, the fifth phase of globalization throughout human history, is powered by digitalization, and China has been playing an important role by opening to the world and investing in innovations. China can expect to generate new vitality by embracing inclusive economic development, building its own international brands, and improving IPR laws and regulations so as to strengthen mutual trust globally. For the rest of the world, China should work to move from being a low-cost supplier to become a partner driven by innovation-based development.

Prof. John Yang commented that Mr. Ghosh offered a magnificent picture with geographical width and historical depth. When weighing China’s issues, one should look up and look far through macro, historical and global perspectives.
