Entrepreneurship and Leadership in Time of Epidemic

Feb 27-2020

Alongside doctors and nurses flying to Wuhan to counter the epidemic, another team consisting of private firms and entrepreneurs has been pooling its forces in the city. Their spontaneous actions, fast response and problem-solving capability as well as the strong sense of social responsibility give Prof. Chen Chunhua the confidence that China will continues to sustain economic growth and societal prosperity.

Prof. Chen, Dean of BiMBA Business School of NSD at Peking University, dedicates an article to chronicling the great endeavors of entrepreneurs, including some NSD MBA & EMBA alumni, in the battle against the coronavirus epidemic. She cites a rough survey by China Entrepreneur magazine which finds that from January 23-31, around 350 firms donated money and medical supplies valued at 12 billion yuan to Wuhan and Hubei Province. Private firms accounted for 8.3 billion yuan. And it was not just the big names such as Alibaba and Tencent; many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have also chipped in.

At Mu Lan Hui, an academy of the NSD dedicated to educating female entrepreneurs, Prof. Chen initiated a project and worked with some entrepreneur-students and alumni to get medical supplies for infected areas. Within 20 hours, 2 million pieces of nitrile medical gloves were purchased and on their way to 11 hospitals and clinics in Huanggang City and Xiaogan area in Hubei Province.

“I admire these enterprises and entrepreneurs. What they have demonstrated – courage, responsibility, innovation and competence – drives the society to develop,” says Prof. Chen.
