John Yang: Give Me Five

The winter of despair will cede to the spring of hope. With this belief in mind, many young professionals are applying to study at BiMBA Business School at Peking University. In a recent online MBA info session for applicants and wannabes, Prof. John Yang lectured on forging leadership under unusual circumstances.

 

Partly captured by the acronym VUCA, today’s challenges are unprecedented in many ways. Prof. Yang said that in 2020, Chinese entrepreneurs and managers must learn to grapple with an ever complicated decision-making process, a bankruptcy crisis enshrouding many small and medium-sized enterprises, still simmering US-China clashes and the global spread of the coronavirus epidemic, as well as the tech- and AI-related opportunities and challenges for traditional industries.

 

The last thing that entrepreneurs and managers should do is fear, for it’s even more destructive than the virus per se. ‘Be the right person, do the right thing,” he thus condensed the insights of many a gurus. The more grueling the hardships are, the more instrumental the leadership.

 

Aptly named The Five Forces of Innovative Leaders, Prof. Yang’s framework encompasses drive, self-control, insight, creativity and focus. ‘Drive’ derives from one’s values, mission and aspirations, and can be clearly seen in politicians such as Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela and entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs and Ren Zhengfei. ‘Self-control’ has much to do with characters, of which honesty and grit are highly valued. Prof. Yang observed that some MBA students lack self-control and grit and readily throw in towels in the face of a crumb of difficulty. The other three forces are all crucial in their own rights, and Prof. Yang used many cases and examples to illustrate.
