Zhang Xiaobo Appointed WPRN Academic Advisor
May 20-2020
Prof. Zhang Xiaobo of the NSD was recently invited by the World Pandemic Research Network to be its academic advisor. Meanwhile, the questionnaires that he crafts for the survey on the survival of medium-, small- and micro-sized businesses (MSMSBs) in the pandemic are being put into global use.
Specializing in development economics and the Chinese economy, Prof. Zhang is also the director of the Center for Enterprise Research (CER) at Peking University and the editor-in-chief of China Economic Review, an SSCI journal. From 2017 to 2019, the CER conducted the Enterprise Survey for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in China (ESIEC), completing interviews with over 8,000 firms in seven provinces. With this solid foundation in place, in February, Prof. Zhang initiated a survey on the impact of the pandemic on Chinese MSMBs and was joined by researchers at partner universities of the ESIEC. The results of the survey, firsthand and highly valuable, were submitted to governments and senior leadership, as well as presented to the public through various media.
The questionnaires of the survey have since been adopted by many countries and international organizations and made available, in major languages, on the website of Center for Global Development. Surveys based on the questionnaires have been conducted by the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank and a number of countries.
The WPRN is a global liaison center for collaborative projects to fight against pandemics and currently focuses on the economic and social impacts of the COVID-19. It has shared Prof. Zhang’s questionnaires through it international outreach and appointed Prof. Zhang as its academic advisor. Prof. Zhang said that he’s very delighted to contribute to global endeavors against the pandemic. On May 17, Prof. Zhang’s team started the second round of the survey on MSMSBs on an expanded scope.
What Prof. Zhang has achieved serves a good example of the NSD’s commitment to integrate academic research with real-world issues so as to further societal progress. During the pandemic, besides Prof. Zhang, many other professors of the NSD have conducted surveys on different topics and penned commentaries to share their expertise.
