"I am a door opener for German firms entering Chinese market"

May 29-2020

Till Moritz Dittkrist, PKU-Vlerick MBA 2019 Part-time Class, BiMBA MBA Ambassador

Till is a German national who has found a second home in China. Jumping back and forth between his native country and the Middle Kingdom, he already looks back on a decade of study and work experience in China. For the last eight years, he has been working in business consulting for German companies expanding in the Chinese market. He currently acts as Head of a German consultancy firm’s Beijing Branch Office.

A door opener for German firms

Till mainly works in the fields of market research, strategy development, market entry and marketing for small and medium sized companies from Germany. In this context, he has gained deep insights in a variety of different business sectors such as automotive, building & environmental technology, mechanical engineering, consumer goods or agriculture.

In his current capacity, he has furthermore been entrusted with tasks for several German government entities. For instance, he acted as Business Representative for the German State of Rhineland-Palatinate and thereby liaised with various Chinese government authorities. Both for Rhineland-Palatinate and for the German capital region Brandenburg he has prepared and implemented numerous delegations’ visits featuring events such as B2B-matchmakings, workshops or investment promotion conferences.

Till sees his role defined as a “door opener” for German firms, which seek to develop the Chinese market – thereby contributing to the economic, cultural and interpersonal exchange between Germany and China.

An MBA for future success

Feeling that he arrived at a new crossroad of his career, Till was looking for a new intellectual challenge and wanted to further broaden his horizon. After carefully evaluating different MBA programs in both Europe and China, he decided to enroll in the PKU-Vlerick MBA program. He believes that the BiMBA Business School is the most attractive choice for anyone, who wishes to enhance their knowledge of international business management techniques while at the same time gaining a deeper understanding of the Chinese economy.

The central reason for him to choose BiMBA as the place to strive for an MBA degree, is the circumstance that it regards itself as a “Business School in a Think Tank”. For him personally, it posed a great opportunity to access one of the places with the most vibrant culture of academic debate in China. He had already been familiar with some academic works of Prof. Justin Yifu Lin - one of the founding fathers of the National School of Development.

During his time studying for a Master’s degree at Trier University in Germany, he had done some research on China’s policy of reform and opening up. “As a matter of fact”, he explains, “my love and enthusiasm for China originates from my fascination with the tremendous successes of China’s economic growth spurt since 1978/79”. Therefore, he is now so thrilled to have the opportunity of studying at Langrun Garden Campus. He regards BiMBA as the ideal surrounding to enhance his knowledge about the Chinese economy, its long-term industry trends and key institutions.

At the same time, he seeks to further augment his skill set in a meaningful way, especially in more technical areas such as accounting, finance, statistics, big data etc.

Rewarding study life in BiMBA

So far, he is very satisfied with his decision to sign up for this challenging program: “The teaching standards are exceptionally high. Professors have very diverse backgrounds and model their respective courses in extremely entertaining ways. All subjects are highly relevant and practically useful.” He feels that every weekend spent at BiMBA is an intellectual stimulation of its own kind. Of course, he states, students are required to shoulder an immense workload – but that’s what makes the studies so rewarding.

He further elaborates on the characteristics that make BiMBA so special: “Especially worth mentioning is the great atmosphere. It truly feels like belonging to a big family. Contacts between teachers and students are intimate and friendly. The close collaboration between students in many common research projects provides opportunities for deep interpersonal bonding and a basis for lifelong friendships.”

Looking at his long-term career prospects, Till desires to get more involved in industries driven by cutting-edge technology. Considering the exponential growth rate of technological progress, he is confident that during the 21st century our planet’s societies will be disrupted by breakthrough inventions that we cannot begin to fathom yet. He believes that especially China is in the frontline of many areas of technological disruption and wishes to do his small part in bringing together Chinese and German ingenuity.
