Graduation Ceremony Supercharged with Energy for Future

Jun 27-2020

A graduation ceremony – moved online due to the pandemic – is held today at the National School of Development and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development. Missing are the handshakes and hugs; yet the ceremony is all the more special and no less emotional. Prof. Chen Chunhua, Dean of the BiMBA Business School at the NSD, writes to the MBA graduates.

She congratulates the Class of 2020 and their families and thanks every graduate for their extraordinary efforts. As early as last semester, the ceremony was thought through to the exact details with the sole aim of showcasing the very best of and for the students. But all have been caught off guard by the pandemic, including disruptions to plans and emergence of an unfamiliar world.

Prof. Chen believes the graduates will look the status quo in the eyes and muster the determination to bring out a stronger self. She recalls how the teachers and students of the Southwest United University, forced to retreat from Beijing to south-western China during the Japanese invasion of China, braved the daunting hardships with steely will. The wife of Mr. Mei Yiqi, then president of the university, had to sell pastries in the street to make ends meet, but the couple jollily named their products ‘Victory-Clinching Pastry’.

Every generation has its own challenges to surmount, says Prof. Chen, and history has proved that every generation is bound to prevail over the challenges. Learning to co-exist with the surroundings, taking them in with calm and candor, and creating one’s own values out of it – this is how every generation has done their share in making the world a better place.

Prof. Chen also says that the school is committed to offering every graduate an opportunity to participate in an offline graduation ceremony, welcoming everyone to join any courses that they have attended online, and facilitating offline interactions between the graduates and their teachers. The beautiful campus of the school is eager to set the scene for future get-togethers.

Graduation comes as scheduled, simply because the students have chosen to embrace challenges, initiate changes, and grow inner strengths. The students’ admirable efforts imbue everyone with the confidence that they are capable of transforming everything and creating their own bright future. Graduating in 2020 might entail a unique mission, and the graduates are well on the mission to make a better self and a better world.
