Corporate Classroom: An Inside Look at Meituan Dianping

Barely two years after its public listing in Hong Kong, Meituan Dianping has seen its market capitalization reaching USD160 billion by August 2020, making it the third largest Chinese listed Internet company. On August 7th, it welcomed in the MBA students and teachers of the NSD, whose ‘corporate classroom’ had already extended to many leading enterprises.

 

A guided tour of Meituan’s exhibition hall allowed the students and teachers to have an overview of the company’s history, branding, and organizational structure, as well as immense social value in the fight against the pandemic. They also got an inside look at how the Internet behemoth deployed big data – called Meituan Brain – to connect 6.1 million merchants with 450 million consumers. On the mission to assist people to eat better and live better, Meituan has become the largest on-demand service platform in China and many of its intelligent and high-tech applications are bound to benefit consumers even more.

 

In the interactive session, Mr. Lai Youwei, head of Meituan Research Institute (MRI), made a presentation on Meituan’s development and changes in the service industry. Digitalization had been in full swing in the service industry, boosting the high-quality growth of the Chinese economy. Meituan’s innovations facilitated new business activities and bolstered the digital upgrading of the supply side, he said.

 

The second lecture was made by Mr. Wang Min, a researcher with MRI, who shared the highlights of the institute’s report on the digitalization of China’s daily life service industry. Data had become a key productive factor, he said, and the profound integration between digital technology and service industry was playing an increasingly important role in improving service quality and enhancing the capability for individualized and diversified services. He also spoke on the trends, bottlenecks and possible solutions in the digital drive of the industry.
