Dean’s Speech -- Prof. CHEN Chunhua: Growth is the Most Beautiful

Professor CHEN Chunhua, Dean of BiMBA Business School, delivered a speech. She said that the year 2020 is a special one, and the newly-enrolled students must have overcome many difficulties and put in a lot of hard work. But she believed that the moment they wear the PKU school badge would make all the effort worthwhile. She introduced that since the establishment 27 years ago, the NSD stayed true to the original aspiration and missions passed down from the six founders and they witnessed miracles of growth.

Students here can embrace more possibilities to make themselves better. Excellent people better understand how to build self-improvement, and the first and foremost thing is to know who you are, which requires a clear understanding of the relationship between yourself and the outside world, of the gap between knowledge and reality, and of the limitations of experience. Everyone has a huge potential, but what kind of results can be achieved depends on a series of factors such as personal habits, attitudes, concepts, and visions.

In the process of getting to know yourself and making necessary changes, knowledge plays a big role. Prof. Chen recommends to the students three books which have great impact on her life: Madame Curie , The Feast of Life and The Effective Executive .

Finally, Prof. Chen said that life is composed with good luck as well as challenges from adversity. Just as the PKUers took classes at the National Southwest Associated University during the war-torn era, the students nowadays could still continue their studies with calmness and hard work when all classes were moved online due to the outbreak of the pandemic. She pointed out that learning to accept adversity and being able to get along with it could help students better chart their course and seek self-improvement.

Apart from “teaching”, the teachers would pay more attention to providing guidance and support in order to unleash students’ inner potential. MBA is of great significance to the lives of students, and he hoped that everyone would make full use of the two years by accepting new knowledge, skills and ideas, practicing self-reflection, re-evaluating their career plans and try to achieve career transformation after graduation.

Dr. Alan Parkinson, Deputy Director (Education) of UCL School of Management, gave a warm welcome to the newly-enrolled students. He introduced that the faculty from the UCL School of Management and the NSD had poured into huge efforts to design and deliver the PKU-UCL MBA program to meet the students’ needs. He believed all the students with different goals could achieve what they want from the MBA program. The MBA learning journey is full of challenges, and Dr. Parkinson used a Chinese proverb to encourage the students that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. He believes that every student will become a person different to the person they are now when they graduate, and they will have three honorable labels -- “MBA”, “PKU” and “UCL”.

Mr. Michael Manlangit, Programme Director of UCL School of Management, said that the students were about to embark on a learning journey full of challenges and difficulties, but they are bound to reap benefits. The pandemic has had a huge impact on the world.
