Chen Chunhua: Key Words in 2021
Jan 02-2021
In a joint event by the NSD and the think-tank affiliated with Tencent, Prof. Chen Chunhua of the NSD proposed some key words for 2021 in her speech. She’s dean of the BiMBA Business School at the NSD and specializes in the research of the growth trajectory of Chinese enterprises and organizational and managerial innovations in the digital age.
Rather than attempting to predict what would happen in 2021, Prof. Chen adopted a cognitive approach to her take. With regard to the business environment in 2021, she identified four dimensions to watch out for: One, digitalization will hit the ‘fast forward’ button and extend from the consumption end to the industrial end. That’s on top of the acceleration of digitalization in 2020 catalyzed by the pandemic. Two, in uncertainties lie opportunities to be discovered, which has become a basic requirement for business owners and managers. Paradoxically, embracing randomness leads to the control of order and situations. Three, new economic paradigm is seeing data – as a productive factor – integrated into productive environments and all industrial links. The linear model of the industrial age is giving way to a synergistic model characterized by relative openness, interactivity, and inter-connection. Four, evolution is the way to go and companies must grow out of their old shells. They can turn to policies like new infrastructure construction, Dual Circulation, and the 14th Five-year Plan for inspirations.
Consequently, companies are advised to focus on four development strategies: For starters, stick to value creation by truly understanding the clients and helping them grow. Besides, build digital capabilities to stay above the basic competitive requirement. Moreover, seek connection and symbiosis by opening up boundaries and creating values with others. Lastly, ensure that your organization keeps learning, so as to continuously enhance capabilities and performance.
In 2020, heroism came to the rescue of the humankind – it sparkled in the fearless efforts of medical personnel, the generosity of many entrepreneurs in making donations, the strife of SMEs to survive and keep their staff on payrolls, and the self-discipline of every common person. Prof. Chen advocated some more heroism in 2021 by staying positive in confronting and surpassing whatever challenges that might arise. True heroism is the echo of a great mind that takes on mission and responsibility and puts in relentless and arduous efforts to ignite progress, she said.
