2022 Commencement: 1,000 Graduates En Route to Life’s New Height

Jun 26-2022

On June 25, nearly 1,000 graduates attended this year’s commencement at the National School of Development (NSD) and the Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development (ISSCAD).

In his commencement address, Prof. Yao Yang, Dean of the NSD and Executive Dean of the ISSCAD, congratulated the 860 Class-of-2022 students and 150 Class-of-2020 students on their graduation. The latter cohort had previously been deprived of a physical ceremony by the pandemic. Prof. Yao urged the graduates to embrace the life attitude of ‘always on the road’, as epitomized by the great Chinese poet Su Dongpo, integrate themselves into the society and enjoy a meaningful life journey by taking on new paths.

Speaking on behalf of the faculty, Prof. Justin Yifu Lin commended the graduates on their strenuous efforts to rise above challenges and their enhanced adaptability. He believed that ISSCAD graduates can deeply relate to four principles: that developing a nation entails surmounting challenges and seizing opportunities; that both efficient market and effective government are indispensable; that one must plant his or her feet in the motherland while casting eyes on the whole world and staying confident in globalization; and that all people must benefit from national development. He encouraged the graduates to put the principles to practice, explore with courage and create valuable experiences.

After group-photo taking, the ceremony, held at the PKU Centenary Hall, began with all participants proudly singing the national anthem, and then featured speeches by professors, student representatives, and guest speakers, before ending with tassel turning.

Of the 860 graduates, 169 are students of the PKU-UCL and PKU-Vlerick joint MBA programs. The BiMBA Business School at the NSD has been educating and grooming Chinese entrepreneurs, business leaders and managers for over 20 years and enjoys a well-earned reputation as a top biz school in the country fusing the best of the East and the West.
