NSD and SAIL Empower Village Heads
Aug 10-2022
On August 4, the NSD opened its door to welcome in over 40 village heads from across the country to attend a tailor-made workshop. Over the course of three days, they listened to lectures by renowned economists, such as Prof. Zhang Weiying and Prof. Zhou Qiren, and the sharing of experts from diverse fields.
The Village Head Workshop was founded by the NSD’s Charity Commission and PKU Social Action and Innovation Lab (SAIL) in 2021 with the aim of helping the participants to harness new resources and develop new ideas for the rejuvenation of rural areas. The three-day learning module at the NSD is to be followed by another model featuring on-site teaching, before ending with one more module combined with a graduation ceremony at the end of the year.
Prof. Zhou Qiren of the NSD started the first module with a lecture laying out the different models for rural rejuvenation based on the integration of his extensive research with fundamental economic principles. The students were inspired to look beyond their respective villages and connect with the outside world.
Mr. Wang Bin, Deputy Director of the Policy and Reform Department of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs delivered a lecture on the development of the collective economy in new-type rural areas. From the perspective of rural governance, he shed light on collective property rights, governance rights, and organizational structure.
Among the dozen or so lectures was one by Ms. Zheng Shujuan, MBA alumna of the NSD and department chief of Sinochem Commerce. She presented a number of real cases undertaken by Sinochem, a state-owned chemical giant, to turn villages into freshly new ones blessed with green mountains and clean rivers.
Prof. Yao Yang, Dean of the NSD, encouraged the village heads to embrace life-long learning and boost rural development. He also expected them to deepen connection with the NSD as it has become their alma mater.
