NSD 2023 Commencement Sets Sanguine Tone for Future
Jun 26-2023
On June 24, the 2023 commencement of the National School of Development was held in a grand ceremony at PKU Centenary Hall. Close to 1,000 graduates from all disciplines and programs, many being in the joyous company of their families, joined NSD faculty members in the celebration.
Following group photos, Prof. Lei Xiaoyan, CCP Secretary at the NSD, announced the opening of the ceremony. As the rousing national anthem of China was played, all participants stood up in salute and sang along with pride.
In his speech, Prof. Yao Yang, Dean of the NSD, expressed the heartiest congratulations to the graduates. He stressed that to make accomplishments, one must be an optimist and pessimist simultaneously. As China is standing at a transitional juncture straddling the past and the future, confidence is of utmost value. He pointed out that confidence comes from heartfelt optimism about the future, which makes one persevere in the face of setbacks, thereby enabling the optimists to score victories in the future. He also urged the students to be mentally prepared when hampered by major challenges. By taking full stock of the difficulties and going all out to solve them, pessimists can win in current situations.
As faculty representative, Prof. Huang Yiping, Deputy Dean of the NSD, said that besides having to deal with unprecedented uncertainties, the students might also find that they don’t have sufficient knowledge or clear career plans for future development. However, he believed these will not dampen their bright future so long as they do their jobs well while persisting in the pursuit of what they are passionate about. He encouraged the students to keep improving their learning, analytical, execution, and innovative skills to get primed for new opportunities. The most important thing, he said, is to carry with them the spiritual core of the NSD, which prizes on serving the nation and seeking harmony in diversity.
Seven student representatives took to the podium in succession. Ms. Huang Cui, on behalf of MBA graduates, said that the NSD stands for a spirit that fuses the best of both China and the West in an open and accommodative fashion, and stimulates everyone to expand their horizon to the whole world and take on responsibility towards the motherland. Studying at the NSD is tantamount to a forging process in which the students reshape their minds and strengthen their bodies through learnings and activities in and out of classroom. She also firmly believes that being a student at the NSD entails passing on the great tradition of combining learning and doing, which in itself is an ever-lasting process of improving oneself, helping others to succeed, and making impacts on the society.
In the ensuing degree-conferring ceremony, professors Justin Yifu Lin, Zhang Weiying, Yao Yang, Huang Yiping, Lei Xiaoyan, Xu Jintao, Liu Guoen, and Ma Hao, among others, turned the tassel for the graduates and partook in photo-taking. Amid the chorus of the song Ode to the Motherland, an upbeat note of the future reverberated in the hall.
