Aug 21-2023
August 18 witnessed the release of the new book, Essential Elements of Platform Economy, by the NSD and Economic View of China News Agency on the occasion of a national economic, financial, and branding gathering.
Prof. Huang Yiping, NSD Deputy Dean, and Prof. Huang Zhuo, NSD Assistant Dean and Associate Professor, are the chief editors of the book, which contains the findings of Peking University’s platform economy innovation and governance research team. The book is published by Peking University Press.
In the foreword, Prof. Huang pointed out that the digital economy is the fruit of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and an economic department in which China has the shortest distance to the very forefront of international economy and technology. Some of China’s bellwether digital economy enterprises are world-leading. All these add up to an incredible achievement for China as a developing country. In addition, the digital economy plays an essential role in China’s high-quality development. However, he also noted that the digital economy has also been beset by certain irregular acts to the detriment of consumer interests and fair competition. How to erect an efficient digital economy governance system and promote its healthy development has become an important research topic for China’s modernization drive.
Prof. Huang also argued that due to its plethora of brand-new traits, the digital economy should not be superficially subjected to the governance measures of the traditional economy, nor should it copy certain policy and practice from Europe and the US. What is needed, he said, is achieving innovation in policy philosophy based on rigorous analysis and then building a governance scheme in line with the idiosyncrasies of the digital economy.
Pooling the research results of PKU’s platform economy innovation and governance team, the book applies a variety of perspectives to the discussions of the platform economy, including macro-economy, platform effect, data, digital finance, algorithms, cross border, governance, and public administration. It dissects the characteristics and policy evolution along the history of platform economy and explores possible paths for its healthy and orderly development, thereby offering rich and diverse angles for theoretical innovation and practical development. The authors come from reputable institutions of higher learning, including Peking University, Renmin University, and Central University of Finance and Economics, and bring with them the expertise in economics, finance, statistics, law, politics and international relations.
Mr. Yang Hu, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Peking University Press, said that such a team of authors ensure multi-dimensional and multi-layered introductions and interpretations of the platform economy. Coupled with rational analysis and lucid language, the book not only makes for the top choice for the public to understand the platform economy, but also serves decision-making authorities, industry practitioners and researchers well.
