Nov 30-2023

On November 21, the NSD and CITIC Press Group held the 20th joint reading club event as part of Cheng Ze Forum. The event focused on the book 30 Tips for Operation , written by Mr. Song Zhiping, NSD Professor of Practice, Director of China Association for Public Companies, and Director of China Enterprise Reform and Development Society. He was joined in the event by Mr. Ning Gaoning, NSD Professor of Practice, former Chairman of the Board of Sinochem Holdings, and author of a series of books on management and strategy; and Prof. Gong Yuzhen, NSD Professor of Management, Deputy Dean of BiMBA Business School, and Deputy Director of NSD Academic Committee.

In his speech, Mr. Song said that 30 Tips for Operation synthesizes his business thoughts and viewpoints based on his long-running practices and aims to be a pocket book for young entrepreneurs. It consists of six parts, respectively on strategy, innovation, operation, management, reform and culture, from which 30 tips are distilled to impart wisdom. Over 110 cases studies are used to illustrate his thoughts, said Mr. Song, emphasizing that making Chinese enterprises a success requires torch-passing between generations and constant endeavors.

Mr. Ning Gaoning recommended the book to young readers, praising its value of condensing the author’s multi-year management experiences. Its merit of being concise would resonate with readers with rich management experiences, he said. He also pointed out that entrepreneurs and managers should put more thoughts into the common sense and fundamental logic of operation and management, and refrain from being obsessed with the ownership types. Both state-owned enterprises and private firms should persist in upholding professionalism and developing good products, while pursuing continuous growth of both organizations and individuals, he said.

Prof. Gong focused his sharing on the strategic wisdom in the book. He commended the book for giving upmost importance to strategy, as embodied by lines like ‘Strategic wins are major wins, while strategic losses are major losses.’ He also pointed out that Mr. Song shared similar views with management expert Maxwell Taylor when he wrote ‘The most important thing in corporate strategy is setting goals.’ Prof. Gong said that only someone who has experienced business competitions on a large scale can write a book with so much insightful and practical content.
