China Economic Annual Conference Held in Wuhan

Dec 04-2023

On December 2, the 23rd China Economic Annual Conference was held at Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and attended by leaders, faculty members, and students of its 36 member institutions and over 80 universities.

A total of 135 papers were selected for the conference. Over 500 participants gathered in Wuhan for the event, including more than 70 persons in charge of leading economic schools and faculties and representatives of 12 reputed publishing houses, 12 first-class academic journals, and over ten recruiting organizations.

Mr. Qin Hong, Standing Committee Member of the Party of Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and its Vice Chancellor, extended cordial welcome to the participants in his opening speech. He pointed out that as the world accelerates transformations unseen in the previous century and a new round of technological and industrial revolutions forges ahead, the Chinese economy is standing at a new historic starting spot. On the new journey to comprehensively build a socialist modern country, the wisdom and insight of economists are needed more than ever to provide theoretical support and policy advice for speeding up the construction of new-development patterns and spurring high-quality economic growth, he said.

Prof. Yao Yang, Dean of the NSD, Dean of BiMBA Business School, and Director General of China Economics Annual Conference, thanked Zhongnan University of Economics and Law and the Secretariat of China Economics Annual Conference for diligently organizing this event. He said that in its modernization drive, China has been introducing Western technologies and thoughts; in today’s new era, China’s current and future economists share the responsibility of constructing China’s own knowledge system. As Director General of China Economics Annual Conference, he hoped the conference will contribute to this cause and urged Chinese scholars to research major issues and produce China’s own theories.

Prof Yi Junjian of the NSD delivered a keynote speech on structural equation econometrics and its applications in China. Then Prof. Robert W. Staiger of Dartmouth College gave a lecture on the challenges for globalization in the 21st century. The ensuing roundtable discussions focused on the role of journals in constructing the academic community. The two-day conference also included 76 thematic sessions and other academic activities.

Launched in 2001, the conference has become an important platform for China’s economic circle to exchange thoughts and probe major academic issues. Currently its secretariat is hosted at the National School of Development.
