Dr. Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp of Merck Foundation Visits NSD

Dec 14-2023

On November 27, Dr. Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp, Chairman of both Executive Board of E. Merck KG and Merck Foundation Board of Trustees, visited the Chengze Campus of the NSD and held talks with Prof. Yao Yang, Dean of the NSD and BiMBA Business School.

Since 2009, Merck China and the NSD have been partnering on the Merck Emerging Markets Management Program, which has trained over 300 mid- and senior-level managers for Merck. In that period, Merck has made a number of donations through Peking University Education Foundation to institute scholarships and support academic exchange and promotional activities of the NSD. Merck’s senior executives have paid multiple visits to NSD and held talks with NSD deans Prof. Justin Yifu Lin and Prof. Yao Yang.

As the top executive of Merck, Dr. Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp visited the NSD in 2018, the year when Merck Group celebrated its 350-year anniversary. The current visit was his first to China since the outbreak of the pandemic.

Joining him on the visit were: Mr. Allan Gabor, Merck China President; Mr. Marc Horn, Merck China Incoming President; Mr. Zhang Wei, Merck Healthcare China General Manager; Mr. Sui Yu, Merck Electronics China General Manager; Ms. Li Ye, Merck China Vice President and Head of Corporate and Government Affairs; and Zhou Liping, Head of Merck China Human Resources.

Also attending the activities were NSD representatives including Prof. Ma Jingjing, NSD Associate Professor of Management and Deputy Dean of BiMBA Business School; and Du Xiaomeng, NSD Research Associate and Deputy Dean of BiMBA Business School.

Prof. Yao Yang extended a cordial welcome to Dr. Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp and his colleagues. He looked back on the mutual visits and collaboration between the two parties over the years and thanked Merck for its long-running support to the NSD. He hoped to see tighter partnership in future.

Mr. Allan Gabor and Mr. Marc Horn took turns to introduce Merck’s 90-year presence in China, including development landmarks, business philosophy, and business distribution. They spoke highly of the joint training programs with the NSD and expressed confidence in strengthening mutual trust and collaboration.

In his speech, Dr. Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp vividly presented Merck’s development from a small drug store in 1668 to today’s technology group with over 60,000 employees across the world and spanning three major businesses: healthcare, health science, and electronics. He also delved into the family firm management mode that Merck has unswervingly adhered to in its 300-year-plus history. He believed that compared with non-family businesses, family firms with rigorous management systems possess better cohesion and tend to embrace long-termism; they also achieve faster growth in development and revenues. After the speech, he took questions from the audience.

In their speeches, Ms. Hou Yun, winner of NSD Merck MBA Scholarship from the class of UP20, and Mr. Wu Jing, representative of Merck Emerging Markets Management Program, expressed gratitude to Merck and the NSD for their immense support to their personal and academic growth.

At the end of the event, Dr. Frank Stangenberg and Prof. Yao Yang exchanged gifts and took photos. The Merck delegation also visited its eponymous MBA Room on the Chengze Campus in honor of its donation.
