NSD Professors’ Books among Bestsellers

On January 4, 2024, China Press Publication Radio Film and Television Journal unveiled economics and management bestsellers of 2023. Many NSD professors saw their tomes featured on the list, including Prof. Justin Yifu Lin, Prof. Huang Yiping, and Prof. Yao Yang.

Prof. Justin Yifu Lin is PKU Boya Chair Professor, Honorary Dean of NSD, Dean of PKU Institute of New Structural Economics, and Dean of PKU Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development. Prof. Huang Yiping is Deputy Dean of NSD, Jinguang Chair Professor, and Director of PKU Institute of Digital Finance. Prof. Yao Yang is PKU Boya Distinguished Professor, Dean of NSD, Executive Dean of PKU Institute of South-South Cooperation and Development, and Director of China Center for Economic Research.

The bestseller list was based on monthly statistics of the journal over the year 2023 and covered 40 categories.

Read and Understand Chinese-Styled Modernization is co-authored by 24 experts and scholars, including Prof. Justin Yifu Lin, Prof. Yao Yang, Prof. Huang Yiping, Huang Qifan, Cai Fang, Ning Gaoning, and Song Zhiping. It applies economic and management perspectives to interpret the connotations, characteristics, and primary tasks of China’s modernization drive, thereby helping readers to grasp the country’s development blueprint. The book’s Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Wang Xianqing, is Director of NSD Communications Department.

The Digital Financial Revolution in China is co-edited by Prof. Huang Yiping and Mr. David Dollar of the USA. A joint project of leading Chinese and American think-tanks (the NSD, PKU Institute of Digital Finance, and Brookings Institution), the book delves into success stories, challenges and prospects of China’s digital financial revolution and explores its global significance and impacts. The late Mr. David Dollar was Chinese Economy Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution and once had a stint as the US Treasury Department’s Special Envoy to China.

The Meaning of Economics, by Prof. Yao Yang, is a primer on economics which relates daily happenings to explain core economic concepts such as utility, opportunity cost, price, and scale economy, among others. It also lays out the development thread of economics and introduces the ties between economics and the real world, thus assisting readers to build comprehensive understanding of economics.

Prof. Yao's book was also voted Top Ten Good Books of 2023 by ECONHOMO, an influential book reading club. It took in most votes cast by a selected group of 3,688 book lovers.
