Global Health and Development: Low-Carbon Economy and Health Innovation, a book co-edited by Prof. Liu Guoen and Prof. Qin Xuezheng, was presented with China New Development Awards by Springer Nature on June 19, 2024. It was the only treatise on health and economics to win the honor this year, due to its major research contribution to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

Prof. Liu is Dean of PKU Institute for Global Health and Development, PKU NSD Professor of Economics, the Ministry of Education’s Changjiang Distinguished Professor, and member of Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. Prof. Qin Xuezheng is PKU Institute for Global Health and Development and Deputy Dean of PKU School of Economics. The book was jointly published by Peking University Press and Springer Nature.

The award, launched in 2019, mainly measures the scientific value and social impact of academic research and commends academic studies that promote the SDG and global cooperation to address worldwide social challenges. The award-winning works not only represent important research fruits of academia and industry, but also offer precious advice to entrepreneurs and government policy makers.

The ten winners this year were selected from the nearly 1,000 academic works in English by Chinese authors and published by Springer and Palgrave Macmillan, both subsidiaries of Springer nature.

Prof. Liu Guoen said that his book benefited from expert opinions delivered at high-level forums and international exchange activities organized by PKU Institute for Global Health and Development. The book covers frontier research on global public health, health economics, environmental engineering, pharmacoeconomics and other relevant fields; it also proposes coping measures for major public health events and ideas for using digital technology to drive healthcare innovation, and sets out fresh research perspectives and development paths for global healthcare.
