2024 CCER Summer Institute Dives Deep into Academic Topics of Practical Value

Nearly 200 researchers attended the 2024 China Center for Economic Research (CCER) Summer Institute, which was held at the National School of Development (NSD) from June 29 to July 1, 2024. They were from renowned institutions of higher learning, including Yale University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Remin University of China.
In his opening speech, Prof. Huang Yiping, Dean of the NSD, welcomed the participants to hold active discussions and jointly create open, inclusive, and pragmatic academic atmosphere. Coming from diverse research fields, they could make use of full exchanges and sharing to explore new thinking modes and methods to solve problems, he said.
Prof. Shang-jin Wei of Columbia Business School delivered a keynote speech titled Mild Government Failure, specifically focusing on China’s innovation-targeted industrial policy. Prof. Wei said that a minor mistake by the government might gravely impact on the effect of industrial policy, while an irrational subsidy scheme might cause patent transactions to further damage the overall interests of society.
The main venue of the 2024 CCER Summer Institute featured brilliant speeches by six professors: Lin William Cong of Cornell University, Karen Fisher-Vanden of The Pennsylvania State University, Francesco Lippi of Luiss University, Gerard Padro of Yale University, Vincenzo Quadrini of University of Southern California, and Adam Tooze of Columbia University.
The keynote speeches were followed by six parallel sessions, which allowed for rigorous and in-depth discussions and exchanges of ideas. The sessions were respectively on: labor economics; development, political economics, micro-economics, and management; international trade, international finance, and inter-disciplines; macro-economics; financial economics; and environmental economics.
Zhang Dandan, Deputy Dean of NSD and Professor of Economics, hosted the closing ceremony on July 1. In his keynote speech titled Billions into Trillions? The Failure to Achieve Scale in Global Sustainable Development, Prof. Adam Tooze of Columbia University dissected what caused the global sustainable development agenda to fall short of its expected targets and what quagmires it has landed in. He pointed out that although the global community has managed to worked out The Paris Agreement and the sustainable development goals in the last decade, challenges abound, including lack of funds, insufficient governance, and geopolitical conflicts. He called on researchers to delve into the causes and push for mechanisms that reinforce global cooperation and capital support. Prof. Tooze then answered questions form the audience about governance in Africa, capital utilization rate, and impact of geopolitics, among others.
Lei Xiaoyan, NSD CCP Secretary, Director of Academic Committee, and Professor of Economics, delivered the closing speech. She expressed sincere appreciation of all speakers and participants and commended on their outstanding speeches and high-quality sharing of research results. She also thanked the strenuous efforts of the organizing committee and volunteers for making the Summer Institute a resounding success.
